I have the free version of Grisoft AVG 7 antivirus on my comp. On the taskbar at the lower right screen....the icon is greyed out. When I move my cursor on it ,it reads "The Virus Vault Is Full", but when I launch the virus vault from the program it reads the virus vault is empty. How to I fix my icon on the bottom of my screen to not be greyed out? What is the problem?

Nettie, suspect you may have one of two problems. Either the vault IS full and the 'empty' report is erroneous or the vault is indeed empty and the program has it erroneously flagged as full. Think I'd first try to go within AVG (folder) itself via 'programs' and see if the vault contains anything (Ctrl+A will select all and 'delete' will clear). There may be an option within there to empty the vault(don't have AVG so dunno)?
My other thought is that the vault is indeed empty and AVG mistakenly has it flagged as full. Simply emptying it again (even if it's empty) may be all that's needed.
If all else fails, you can always delete AVG entirely and simply get a new (free) copy.

I cannot empty it again as the icon options to do so are all greyed out and unaccessible.

When there is something in the vault AVG produces a folder in the root of C.

I can't remember what it is called (I always delete it) but it's near the top and presumably starts with A.

Seem to think the word vault appears with some character (% maybe) before and after it. If you can find this, making sure it is the right folder, then try deleting it.

If your updates are behind this also grey's out the tray icon.

ok guys....I went ahead and removed the old avg and then downloaded it again. STILL the same......"virus vault is full" when its not! I also updated with the new download. When I access the virus vault from the program of course I can't empty it when it reads it already is empty ...(ie) the icons on the taskbar are greyed out.

Did you look in the C root for the vault folder?

I went into C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free and opened the "avgvv.exe" This also says that the Vault is empty.

The vault folder arrives directly on the root C itself (not in program files, windows, or any sub-folder). See if you can see anything that looks like it. I think it's initial letter might be A because it was at the top of my C.

.... just been doing a bit of Googling and it seems that the vault folder appears here:

C:\$VAULT$.AVG

If you can find the folder $VAULT$.AVG on the root, try deleting it to see if this helps. It does no harm to do this unless for some reason you need the viral file back again. I always delete it, hence I hadn't one on board to check the name.

If that doesn't work, just delete and reinstall AVG.

If it was full, you have been in dangerous waters indeed. Hav e you gotten warnings before this, or knew for sure that something (anything) was in there?

Derek, I haven't a clue what "root" you are talking about. Where is the root? GXI man, i have already tried by reinstalling it and it still reads it is full. Thanx for all your help guys.....I am still trying to figure this one out!

oops..OK ..I found the root of C and see the $VAULT$.AVG folder. I was going to delete it when I got a popup window that said it was a "system file " and if I delete it, one of my programs may not work. Should I go ahead and delete it anyway? When I double clicked the vault folder, a geyed out "Microsoft Word" icon appeared. Maybe that it the program I will have trouble with if I delete the vault folder?

GXI man, I don't know if anything was in there because the program was dormant as I was using my NAV 2005 program until I couldn't download any new updates then...I went back into my old program folder and drug out the AVG to use.

Good idea to not have two active AV programs at the same time.

That's just a standard message you get whenever you try to delete any file which has been marked as "system". It's fine to delete $VAULT$.AVG

I would agree totally with GXI Man, you need to decide which AV you want to use. If you have more than one running you are asking for conflicts.

... oh yes, root. Think as your file/folder structure as a tree. C is the root and all the other sub-folders/files are branches off the main root. So I just meant that the folder is directly off C itself, rather than in some sub-folder (branch) off C.

Similarly A is the root of a floppy.

Thanx guys. I deleted the Vault folder but the problem still remains. I am only running the AVG 7 antivirus not NAV 2005 now.

All I can suggest is that you now try uninstall/re-install AVG. Maybe without that $VAULT$.AVG folder it will make a difference.

Do this:

Make sure $VAULT$.AVG is not there.

Uninstall AVG, then reboot.

Re-install AVG, then reboot.

Also, have you completely uninstalled NAV? - 2005 uninstalls cleanly but if it's still on there I wouldn't be too surprised if it's part of your problem.

Well, I'm now a bit stumped.

The only thing I can think of is that there is either some previous file still lurking or a registry entry.

You could uninstall AVG yet again and search/find to see if any AVG Grisoft files are remaining. Particularly make sure that the Grisoft folder has gone from c:\program files

Otherwise it's a case of going through the registry (with AVG uninstalled) looking for Grisoft or AVG entries that you could delete. If you are not familiar with the registry you might be best to avoid this idea, or takes special care (backing up registry first).

The only other things I can suggest is that you either go to the AVG forum and see if they can help, or forget AVG and download AVAST freebie which has very good reports.

Found the cure!!!! (accidently) Hey Guy's, I also noticed that My recycle bin was not storing deleted files like original settings to do so. Upon investigation on where my deleted files were going ..it took me to this site... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/173416/en-us

Upon following those instructions it fixed my recycle bin AND AVG 7!!!! Now everything works fine (knock on wood)
Thanx for all your help and patience with me I really appreciate it :)

Wow, glad you had that accident. I doubt if I'd have thought of that one, although it all makes sense with the advantage of hindsight.

Thx for popping back to let us know the outcome - it could prove useful.
