formatting external lacie 500 gb

just purchased an external hard drive lacie 500gb. i need to format it. there is no software with it. the manual is contained in a cd rom but cannot open it. can you tell me how i format it. i operate Windows ME thanks

To use it with Windows ME you have to use a partitioning program like FDISK to break the drive into several partitions first. Windows ME does not work correctly with partitions larger that 137GB in size. ScanDisk and Defrag for example will corrupt the partition information if they are larger than 137GB.

Summary: The maximum file size on a FAT32 formatted partition is 4 GB or 4,294,967,296 bytes minus 2 bytes ... The only I know to get around that problem would be to split your data into multiple smaller files...
