I am trying to open floppy disks on the A drive and no matter what disk it is it wont let me open it, it says it needs to be formatted. So, when i try and format them it says it cannot format it because either there is no disk in the drive or it has the wrong capacity. All the disks im trying to use are 3.5 inch and 1.44mb compatible. Im not sure if i need an updated driver or what but no disks work no matter what there are or how older or new they are. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Unless this is a USB style drive you should have no problem with the disk's, have you ever used this drive before and it worked and now it does not ?

Check the cables both data and power to the drive. Post back and we can help you more from there.

Keep the old stuff running

If you should happen to know someone still using W95 or W98 then try formatting one or more of the floppies on their machine from DOS. You use the command:

format a:

Over the years I've had floppies that seem to have got screwed up and the above fixes them. Afterwards they then format OK in normal Windows.

There are different types of floppy disks: single sided, doublesided/double density, and high density are three I can remember. Depending on how old your computer it, the drive you have my only be able to read the older floppies.

What make/model is your computer and what is the floppy drive in it?

Or, if it's not a compatibility issue, it may be just the simple fact that the drive has gone bad or is misaligned.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.
