formatting a drive

hi, i want to format my C drive as in completely erase it i have all the drivers i need and everything but every time i go into dos and type "c format" it tells me it cant because its in use. i close all programs and still it does this. C is my main drive it has windows installed in it how do i format this drive, thanx

ok, my brother has winme and wants 98 i gave him my cd for 98 but it wont format c...we fdisked and it went ok but still cant format c or setup with 98 cd why?

Malissa, its best to start your own thread rather than include your question in someone elses post..
The 98 disk will not format c. You need a windows startup disk [also known as boot disk].
FDISK deletes and creates partitions. FDISK is not needed when formatting windows me to install windows 98.
If you ran FDISK you will need to format the newly created partition.
The link in response 3 will tell you have to create a boot disk and contains links to information for using the format tool.
