My floppy drive isn't working, but I wanted to format my hard drive and clean install Windows XP. How do I do it without a working floppy drive and startup disk?

Do you have a bootable CDROM drive and disk?

You can do that with the Xp CD.

Jump into the bios and change the boot order to read CD Rom, Floppy, HDD0.

Insert the xp cd in the cd rom.

Save the changes to the Cmos and when the pc reboots after the post you will get an option to boot from CD rom.

Press the enter key at that point and follow the instructions the XP installer gives you.

When you get tot he partition information you will be asked if yu wish to leave the drive as it is or format highlight the C drive and choose fromat drive in NTFS.

That will wipe all you have and change file format to ntfs. If you have more than one partition on the drive you can format that after xp has been loaded.

Hope that helps

How do I boot from the CD? When the computer starts up, I press 'delete' to enter the 'AwardBIOS Setup Utility'. I go to the 'Boot' menu and under:

'1. Removable Device' I have five options:
- Disabled
- Legacy Floppy
- LS-120
- ZIP
- ATAPI MO

I know it's not the 'Floppy' or 'Disabled'. Which one do I select?

the next numbers are:
2. IDE Hard Drive
3. ATAPI CD-rom
4. Other Boot Device

In the boot section of the bios set the boot order as follows.

ATAPI CD rom
floppy
HDD0

Inser the XP cd in the cd rom drive.

Save the changes to the cmos and exit.

When the comp reboots and the post has finished checking the configuration you will receive a message at the bottom of the creen which will read.

Press any key to boot from cd rom
Hit the enter key.

The cd will boot the comp and the XP installer will start.

From that point follow the setup instructions. When the computer has finished laoding the install files it will reboot automaticly.

At that point jump back into the bios and change the boot order as follows.

HDD0
CDrom
Floppy.

Save and exit, and just allow the xp installer to continue from there.

Hope that helps
