insert your start up disk and start with or without cdromm support then at the command prompt type in
format c: then answer y to the warning that will appear that is all there is to it

insert your start up disk in drive a turn on the puter you can then start with or without cdrom support then at the dos prompt type the command format c: (return) assuming that it is your c drive that you want to format if not then subsitute the drive letter with the one that you want to fomat it will then ask if you are sure as this will erase all the data on your hard drive press y then return then sit back and watch all your programs dissapear of your hard drive

...just did this recently (bloody WinMe!) Make a start-up disk, then make sure that fdisk.exe and format.com are on the disk. If memory serves, the WinMe start-up disk doesn't have format.com, so you'll need to copy it from C:\Windows\Command onto the disk. Start your computer with the start-up disk (with or without CD-ROM support-it doesn't matter at this point). When you reach the DOS prompt, you know what to do *grin* Learned this one from experience and armwrestling this thing into submission, so feel free to email me if you need more.

I love it! DOS Lives on. I read a report that says that Windows Whistler will not have a Startup Disk or have the option to make one! Now just how will we FDISK and Prepare our Hard Drives then?

The format command is in the ebd folder on the floppy which is then transfered to the ramdisc when you start the computer with or without cdrom supportand fdisk is in the root folder

Actually they both are on there, that is Fdisk and Format. Just like everyone else has said make a boot disk. You can do it by going to "Add/Remove Programs" in your Control Panel, the click on the tab that says "Startup Disk" then click "Create Disk" Windows will automtically format the floppy and copy all the files you need, including Fdisk and Format. After this is done reboot your computer with the new boot disk and you can select either: 1. Start computer with cdrom support or 2. Start computer without cdrom support. It does not matter which one you choose, but I would recommend without cd support because it will load faster. Then all you have to do is type this in: format c:
You don't have to type c: then format c:, you can just type in format C: from the A: prompt. As a matter of fact I think you may have to type it it from the A: prompt because you booted from the floppy, so you will also have to get the command from it as well. Alternatively, you can also type in from the A: prompt: format c: /q
This will do an extremely fast format of the hard disk. Actually all that is, is deleting data from the hd as opposed to the computer replacing all the data with zero's. I usually do the format c: /q command since it is much quicker. Some people would swear that this is a bad way of doing it, but I have never had any problems with the /q switch. The only time that you may not want to use the /q switch would be if you suspect some serious data corruption and want to make sure the data is purged, but if you fdisk it then you have no choice but to use only the format command.I am sorry for rambling on, I have just had no sleep in days and a little delirious; pardon me. Anyway, I hope this helps you and not confuses you instead.
