Some questions to help narrow things:
1. Did you install or change any software/hardware when the sound stopped working?

2. What soundcard do you have exactly?

3. Are the sound options greyed-out in windows or can you select them and just not hear them.

4. If the sound options are not greyed out, have you checked the speakers? Either plug headphones into the port and listen, or plug the speakers into any audio source with a headphone jack.

5. Are there any exclaimations (!) on your device manager next to the soundcard or any other hardware?

The above information should help point us in the right direction.

1.my sound stopped working...so then i delted some sort of ALi driver, as well as a PCI Audio componenet..becasue i heard that if i uninstalled them they would automatically come back..at least that's what i thought. I then went to ALI's webstie and downloaded the driver i beleive i need.
Here is the exact info my computer says:
MOtherboard chipset= Ali M1632M CyberBLADE
ALADDIN I1
And Under Multimedia, it says:
Audio Adapter= ALi M5451 AC-Link Controller
Audio Device

Which one represents my sound card? Maybe I have them mixed up.
2.All of the sound options are greyed out, even though in sounds and mnultimedia it says my driver is working properly, and there are no exclamation points or anything anywhere...hmm hope this helps...

It is possible that the original drivers got corrupted and you installed the wrong one. If you did install the wrong one, windows will probably not give you the correct info in the device manager.

If you are not 100% sure of which soundcard you have, I recommend you open up your pc and look at the sound card. It should list the manufacturer and model.

Post back the info.

I should have been clearer. Do you have integrated sound or a PCI sound card? Do you have both?

Hi...well i remember something with the name PCI Listed under my audio category, but i removed it awhile ago hoping it would reinstall itself, but it never did. How do i know which one i Have, or if I have both?

Also, How do I open my PC and look at my sound card? Thanks for your patience....

Sorry for not catching this earlier.

You never specified that your pc was a laptop, but that is what the M1632M driver is for. If the Toshiba Equium desktop also uses this controller, it does not say.

Post back with your Toshiba Model and I will help you find / install the correct drivers.

If it is a laptop, try Windows Update. When it scans your pc, it might find that you are missing the audio driver. Microsoft may have the driver and install it for you.

And yes, audio problems do take patience. I have done this twice for myself, once at work and twice for friends.

Barring faulty harware, there is a solution.

Here is the link for the Toshiba drivers. Remove and delete the previous ones you downloaded. They will not work on your system.

Toshiba Satellite 1805-S203 Windows Me Drivers

There is no sound driver listed. It may be included in the general "software upgrade" but no details are available. I think you need to call Support at (800)457-7777 and ask.

Please post back, I am curious to see what they say.

It is your display driver. Leave it alone.

You should not just get rid of drivers.

I was refering to the one you downloaded from the ALi site. The Ali drivers used in your Satelite are customized for Toshiba.

Any drivers you downloaded from the ALi website probably won't work right, according to their disclaimer.

Maybe - maybe not.

If you have the original restore disc's and all the files you need are are on them, you could use them to restore everything. Including sound.

If you have a hidden restore partition on your drive that the restore is done from, it won't work if something was damaged.

Call the 800 number I gave you above to find out for sure.

ok..i removed all the other useless sound driver that i got from Ali's website that wasn't working. when i restarted it said it was going to reinstall my old drivers, however a file could not be found : "aliadwdm.sys". It said it needs the file C:Windows\OPtions\CABS\aliadwdm.sys
and the destination file is C:Windows\System32\Drivers.

so could it be that i just need that file, and windows can reinstall my original drvers?

Yes, that is the name of the driver we have been talking about, only we did not know the name. Call the 800 # to ask why it is not on the website (link above)and ask them where to get it.

If the machine came with any driver disc's, it would be on there as well.

If you can't find the disc, (broken record) call the 800 number. At least now you know the name of the file you are asking them for: aliadwdm.sys.
