Folders missing in Explorer

When I open explorer, it defaults to having the 'folders' button pressed as I would expect. Unfortunately the pane on the left wher ethe folder list usually resides is a grey box with a black 'X' at the top right. Whatever I do I cannot get this pane to display my folders. Any ideas?
