I want to update my bios but am very afraid it will render my Pc useless. I've previously attempted to do this and somethign went wrong and bingo, my PC wouldn't boot anymore. What is the safest way to perform this operation?

Most modern bios's have a devolution option.. In which you can save the bios to a backup file, or can over write a newer version with an older one.

Check the mfg site.
