Hello everyone! I have a little bit of a frustrating problem with my machine! Here's the scoop:
I have been trying to log on to AOL but the connection always fails when trying to connect to the AOL network. I was unable to actually complete the log on process. I am not sure what to do from here, but I have two ideas: (connection issue or firewall issue).

After some digging, I found out that I needed to have something called" the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Service" (local computer) turned ON.

When I go to Control Panel, Administration Tools, Services, the find Remote Access Auto Connection Mgr and tried to START it, I received this message: "Could not start the remote access auto manager service on local computer. Error 1717: The interface is unknown".

Some other key information: A few days ago I put on Service Pack 1. Someone told me that this may have put some type of firewall (ZoneAlarm?). When I got Add/Remove programs, there isn't any Zone Alarm to even remove. However, could there be some hidden firewall?

Please help, I am really confused! Thank you so much!

Katie

Katie, as far as I know, there's no built in firewall in ME. XP yeah, but not ME.
My SWAG is that you need to double check your connection settings and be sure they're correct. Sounds to me like you never get connected at all and that's why you get the error report.

I thing her post says she is using XP, easy to make that mistake after all this is the Me forum. anyway katie try going to aol system information-start bottom/programs/aol/aol system info. when the window comes up click on the utilities tab and click on the uninstall the aol adaptor button. then close that window and click on the aol icon on your desk top, and let it reinstall the adaptor

Hey! I tried working under AOL system info. When I tried to rebuild it, I restarted and this message came up: "This software you are installing for this hardware: WANminiport (ATW) has not passed Windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP." I just went along with the install anyway.

When I tried to start AOL, it still did not make the connection (ending when it tried to connect to the network).

The message on AOL says "This message could eb the result of an active firewall on your computer restricting the AOL software from making a connection. If you have firwall software installed, please config. it to allow the AOL software (AOLacsd.exe and waol.exe) access to the internet".

I just installed SP1, and do not know of any firewall that I installed. Any ideas?

Thanks Larry,

-K:)

Katie

If you do install/use another firewall, instead of the one included in XP. You could disable the XP one. There's all kinds of info, on the XP firewall, at/in the micros_ft KB
