whenever i go to open up a word document an error message occurs which reads "cannot open the existing (square box symbol appears) it then says check the file permissions and i dont know how to do this on windows ME, it also says the file is locked for editing. I cant be sure that my computer hasn't got a virus even though my virus checker hasnt picked it up

zoe123, not sure about why you can't open docs. If you are concerned about a virus, there are several free on-line scans that will check for you. Just pick the one you like best. HTH. Ed in Texas.
