Scandisk constantly reports FAT table errors. Scandisk repairs problem. Upon next boot or check scandisk reports another FAT table error. Any suggestions for permanent repair? Thanks

Try Norton 2001 disk doctor which may help but your drive may be trashed in which case reformatting may help but probably needs to be replaced.

I had this exact same problem about 3 months ago. I got continuous fat errors. Scan disk would fix the problem & when I would turn it on the next day, it would report more errors. After about a week of this & trying different disk utilites (to no avail) I took it to the shop & was told the hard drive was about gone & needed to be replaced.

It might not be the drive. This is with
Windows ME? I had a problem with Scandisk in Windows 98 1st ed. so often I began to
wonder if there were a bug in Scandisk.
Scandisk would report the fat tables did not match and offer to repair the fat table from a back up copy. If I let it replace the Fat, it would then need to repair each file, and it would keep going until I formatted and reinstalled.
The drive was not bad. At least it was not going out for I have Windows ME on it now and it is still working.
Before I gave up on the drive I would
reformat it. Then if you do not want to make an install on a questionable drive, you
could get a MS-DOS boot disk (6.2 or so) with Scandisk on it and run that to check out the drive before installing any Windows at all on it. If all you have is your startup disk, use the scandisk on that.

I started getting fat errors on my pc running Win95. Formatted reloaded same thing. Even went so far as to fdisk/format & install dos/win3.1 to see if it would run. Fat errors still & continuous lockups in programs. Strange thing was scandisk would only find fat errors which I thought was not a serious problem until it started happening 5 times a day. Installed Nuts & Bolts & ran there disk utility & it found 15 media defects on the drive. Also the hard drive made loud strange clicking noises when it was in use. Got it replaced. No more problems. Scandisk is no good if the drive is having bad problems. Wouldn't report the media defects.
