Comment:

I am getting an error on boot stating:

"Error Loading Explorer.exe
You must reistall windows"

I have tried the MS Knowledge Base for info that re-generates the Explorer.exe from the CAB files. It did NOT work.

I have been told that I need to do an overlay install to keep most settings and data.

If correct, then how do I do that?

Thanks,
Fred

What happens when you get the explorer.exe error is safe mode? When I try to boot up in safe mode it will show me the wallpaper on my desktop and then give me the error. After I cancel out of the error it does nothing but sit there and does not load anything.

Go to Microsoft Knowledge Base article # 299296 at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q299296

The error is from a damaged DLL file created by Install Shield. I also had some other problems that solved themselves after I updated by Install Shield software at WindowsUpdate.
