Comment:

I have a Toshiba Portege 3440CT. I have formatted the drive and clean installed a copy of WinME. Everything went ok with the install and the computer works fine in every respect except for the internet.

I have no probem getting an internet connection with UKonline or Plusnet, it just will not load any pages. I get the 'site not found' page every time. I have checked all of the modem settings as well as the TCP/IP settings. I have tried copying these settings from another working system but still no joy. I have tried upgrading explorer to version 6.....and have even tried using a Internet connection disc to profile the system...no good, Any ideas?? any help greatly appreciated!

reset your IE settings back to default !!!

Check that your proxy settings and firewall settings are correct.

Check your router settings also, password etc.

Sounds bit starnge I admit. Have you loaded all the necessary drivers etc ??

Did you try opening the control panel and the ADD/REMOVE Programs ? You will find what ever version of I.E. you have listed in ADD/REMOVE and select it and pick remove ,it should offer you a option to repair. If it does'nt cancel out the task ,if it does ,which it should ,try it ,you may just be lucky enough that this will fix the problem you are having !
Good Luck Nick

Tried both of those, IE is not listed in the add/remove programs. Have reset all settings to default...no joy.

hi there, its a laptop and it has an internal modem. I am using dialup for a connection.

As I said, there is no problem connecting to the ISP, I have the two flashing monitors icon in the system tray and all is well in that respect.

The problem is no matter what domain I type in all I get is 'this page can't be found'
with the usual 'detect network settings, check dms errors etc

It's baffling me!

So you can ping a domain and get a response? You've tried to uninstall dial-up networking and reinstall it. You've deleted your connection and made a new one. You've made sure if you're using a proxy it's set right. If your not using one, it not checked to use one.

If you put the numerical address to a site, does it work. e.g.

http://69.93.141.100/

You said you updated to IE6. It's not displayed in Add/Remove Programs?

Are you using a fire wall? If so, does IE have rights to connect.

Are you using any security program that would effect IE

What is the exact version of your IE, and this is what you're using to connect, yes.
