Comment:
Everytime I start windows explorer opens the C:\Windows folder. I've emptied the startup folder and checked msconfig.
The only Norton software I run is antivirus 2002 and the problem is not related to that.
Any suggestions gratefully received, this problem is not causing any harm, although it is bugging the hell out of me.

Strange this as it's usually the other way round - people don't like the way it opens up with "My Documents" all the time. In fact I even downloaded an application to change it so it would open the C: drive rather than "My Documents".
Anyway, take a look in the following registry key to see if there's any clues, as this key holds most of the behaviour settings of Explorer:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Hope this helps,
Mark

Thanks for that Mark, but I'm not sure that I explained myself terribly well.
What is actually happening is that everytime I restart my PC, after all my apps have loaded, is that I get a C:\Windows window opening up. I don't want an explorer window opening up at startup at all!

They don't seem to help but thanks for trying. My only Symantec is NAV 2002, which has been installed for a while, and the problem has only started recently.
I've been right through the startup tab on msconfig and that doesn't seem to help either.
However if I don't process win.ini on startup that seems to stop it, but I have no idea which entry is causing it....

Try looking at your C:\Windows\WIN.INI file with notepad. Use the Search tab and search for EXPLORER. There should not be a match in a default WIN.INI file. If you find such a line, it may be your problem.
There should be two lines
load=
run=that should have nothing after the =
bet that one of them not being blank is the problem.

winkles,
xxJust curious. Open your win.ini and look under;
[windows]
load=
run=Start>>Run>>Type; win.ini>>Press; Enter
Will open it up for you or open it up with notepad.
I'll Try

Sorry JackG, your post wasn't there till I posted mine :)
I guess my browser didn't refresh :)

That's cured it!
Thanks S.T.A.R. Thanks JackG. Somehow I had run=. in my win.ini and that was causing the problem.
Thanks again, and thanks everyone else who has answered.
