Has anyone ever seen the:

"Explorer has caused an error in CBRVIDDC.dll"

If I click close it clears the desktop and I can still movce the mouse around the blank screen, but if I don't click it everything appears normal except for the error box.

Ideas for fixing this?

Yep, download, fully update and run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.04 and Spybot S&D 1.3 before you do anything else. Then run CWShredder 1.59.1.

Yep, try doing an online virus scan or two.

Panda Active Scan

TrendMicro: Housecall

And do a search for CBRVIDDC.dll and write down where it's living at the moment (eg: c:\windows\system).

Then right click on the file and select "properties" and jot down it's details.

Ad-aware "sees" it but can't get rid of it when the computer restarts. What am I looking for in properties?

It's living in the windows\system where you mentioned...

Your not looking for anything. I want all the details that's listed in properties before I tell you to boot into safe mode and delete the file.

Write down any and all the details on the "general" tab and if it has a "version/summary" tab, I want the file information off that too.

ok,

Type of file: Application extension
opens with: unknown app.

location c:\windows\system

Size 305 kb
Size on disk 320kb

Marked read only.

When I go into safe mode, the box pops up and the system locks.

Thank you for your help :)

Ok, run an online virus scan and an online Trojan scan.

Also fully update Adaware and spybot again and run them, see if that gets rid of things.

Reboot after the scans and do a search for the file again. If it's still there try booting into safe mode again and deleting it.

If the same thing happens with safe mode, then run HijackThis 1.98.2 and post a log file.

You will more than likely end up deleting this file from DOS -- so make sure you have a WinME startup disk (bootdisk) ready.

I ended up using a bootdisk to get into DOS, deleting the files in DOS. When the computer rebooted the desktop looked like it was in safe mode and still popped the box up. I ended up using the helpfile on the bootdisk to recover the system from the D: paritition, and then when things were "normal" I went into safe mode and started cleaning everything out with ad-ware, spybot, and avast! 4.1. So far so good now.

Good news :) Now get yourself a copy of spywareblaster 3.2 installed, if you haven't already.
