Reinstalling WinME did not help. Any ideas?

A couple of questions:
Is it EVERY folder? Or just one or two in particular?
Can you open them in Safe Mode?
How many characters does the folder name contain?

The error usually occurs when I have 1 or 2 windows or folders open and I try to open another window, folder, drive, or Search. It varies with at least 6 different culprits. I usually can get open what I need by retrying, so I haven't tried Safe Mode. Thanks for responding.

I've been having a simliar problem. Running WinME and everytime I start up explorer will only work for a little while before freezing up. The desktop and start menu and systray etc do not work but the mouse never freezes. I can ctrl-alt-del and close explorer, and it'll restart and work again. But I can't run certain things sometimes. The time it takes for explorer to lock up varies on every restart. Right clicking on the desktop and trying to alter display properties is a gaurrenteed way to make explorer stop responding.
I never had the ole32.dll error until a little the last time it froze and it kept popping up over and over.
This is really frustrating, and if anybody has any ideas what could be the problem or how I could fix it it would really help me out.
Thanks in advance,
amrp.s. I've scanned disk, run norton anti-virus and I get no errors or virus'.

I am having the EXACT same problems as amr. It is becoming quite frustrating. Sometimes my explorer will work for hours and sometimes only minutes before locking up and spitting back "Explorer error in OLE32.dll". At times, it keeps spitting back this message everytime I close the window making it difficult to restart even from the Ctrl+Alt+Delete procedure. When Windows ME restarts my active desktop is disabled or I have a completely white screen with no desktop icons available. If I click to enable the active desktop it sometimes freezes again, thus resulting in another restart. Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem too. my computer freezes even when I have no programs running. Then I ctrl-atl-del and it says explorer not responding, so i close it and it gives me the explorer error...ole32.dll message. It usually happens about 5-10 minutes after I start or restart the comp. please help me!!! thanks.

I am also having this problem with WINME - frustrating isn't it ?! PLEASE will someone tell me how I can resolve it !! Thanks :)

I've been experiencing this problem a couple of days ago. I've turned off and restarted my computer for many times. I'm tire of this stupid error message keeps popping up even though after window has engaged in shutting down. I know a few ways you could do to but they will only temporarily reduce the error message, maybe you should try them while we're looking for the real solution.
*Go to Start, select Run, type in "MSCONFIG", then go to the StartUp tab uncheck everything and recheck the following items if you see them:
-AvconsoleEXE
-VscomrEXE
-VsstatEXE
-Vshwin32EXE
-AlogSRVEXE
-CP32NOT
-PrPcMonitor
-System Tray or systray
-Load Power Profile
-Scan Registry or ScanReg
-StateMGR
-PC Health
-SSDPSRV
-and your antivirus software (McAfee WebscanX, Norton, etc...)*other way is to fix your IE browser, go to your control panel and click on Add/Remove on Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (you might have a different version), then click on the repair option.
After all this is done, you will experience less error problem and when your computer freezes just hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, select Explorer and click End Task, and your computer will resume its normal operation. It works for me today, but I'm not guaranteed 100%, at least you don't have to turn it off or restart it.

Same problem started when we installed AATBI after the recent @Home debacle. We tried KT's fix with about the same results -- maybe the frequency of the problem declined, but it still happens and drives us totally nuts! (We're also working with a home LAN and firewall, BUT this problem occurs only on our Windows ME machine, and NEVER on our Windows 98 machine.)

Hi all,
I had this same problem, and boy was it maddening. For some reason, I think I got my computer working again. I went to
control panel > system
and clicked on the "performance" tab
then I clicked the "file system" button
which brought up a file system properties box. Then, in this box, I clicked the "Troubleshooting" tab.
Here, I noticed that the "Disable System Restore" had been deselected. I reselected it and closed the window.
When I rebooted again, my computer was working fine.
I don't know if this is what fixed it, but I thought I'd everyone know, just in case.

Hello,
I have this same problem, and never had it before. We also have AT&T cable internet. I thought you were supposed to always have the system restore function ON. Is it OK to have it disabled?
Thanks, Jo

hello, i dont have this problem but 3 people on my network have the same thing and they are all running windows ME. they asked me if i could try to fix it but nothing said above did anything. i cant run virus scan because before it finishes the computer freezes and does its thing again.

One of my users is getting the ole32.dll errors after they installed internet explorer 6.0. it keeps asking her to send the error to microsoft over and over. It wont go away. any ideas?

FYI Iwas getting the same ole32.dll error as most of you, I tried Nathan's fix ie "Disable System Restore"
This seems to have worked for me.
Thanks Nathan

I seem to have fixed this by reinstalling IE6.0. I had the OLE32 problem for the last month with it getting very bad the last few days. I did a partial installation off of the Microsoft site and it seems to have worked.

Nothing to add to this problem, other that
I'm having the exact same problem. Here's my set up for any common patterns:
MSWINME / IE6.0 / Cable ModemJust searching the various boards, a lot of
people are having this problem but no clear fix.My guess is virus that just hasnt been identified/figured out yet.

Thanks for all your input. I think I've tried just about everything I can think of except redownloading the setup for IE6.0. So far "Repair" and reinstall using IEsetup from August has not worked, just as cleanig out the registry of lots of junk and removing unused and damaged activeX has not worked.

i also get the msg
this computer is running: windows ME, ie 5.5, and a cable modem, anyone else running a cable modem in winme
it's obviously a winme problem, i am trying the repair ie thing if that doesn't work i'll try the disable system restore

tried the system restore fix. worked for 2 days, but now i'm getting the same error again. this really sucks.
i'm also on WinME, IE 6.0, cox cable modem.
HELP !!!

ya me too. I was wondering the same question. I am surfing internet with Cable Modem/WINME/IE 6 and it comes up. Then i uninstall 6 back to 5.5 and it still does. I download mcafee. Disable restore files. and run virus scan. Find 2 viruses then delete them and error still goes on. I think we should email microsoft. Well if any one else knows a way that would be great.

I was having the same Explorer OLE32.dll problem after my cable mode provider switched me to a Dynamic IP address. So I was using a router to hook two pc's to the cable modem, and it was also proividing DHCP services. I changed my two computers to a fixed internal IP address instead of dynamic, and it was fixed. This is probably not a solution for most, but it might help someone - this has to be a MS problem. This happened on two machines. One is a Win98 sp1 machine, the other was a ME machine.
Good Luck

I solved this problem by booting up with my start-up disk and reinstalling Windows ME from the DOS prompt. Just be sure to choose the option to run with CD ROM Support so you can access the Windows ME reinstall CD and it's a good idea to make sure your mouse driver is on your start-up disk as well. At the A: prompt change to your CD ROM directory and then type setup.exe to begin the Windows ME CD. This reinstall overwrote whatever was causing the OLE32.DLL errors!

seen the same "fix" in a couple different places lately...
something to do with an "always on" connection and the Universal Plug and Play option for WinME and XP. Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and click on the Windows Setup tab. Double click on the Communications heading and make sure that the Universal Plug and Play box is NOT checked...
I just tried this and so far everything's working. Microsoft has more info at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-054.asp

well i had the same problem it drove me crazy I just used joshua sugestion and so far so good
thanks alot
thank g-d for this website
I was about to re-install

just an addition to the "fix." (and yes, my computer still works after 24 hours and three restarts!)
the plug and play thing automatically detects and and downloads new drivers for hardware (such as usb devices, etc.). if you want to use it, just make sure you are not plugged in to your network (or cable/dsl modem) on start-up.
did this work for anyone else? or did i just get lucky?

I am about to try joshuas solution,
just a quick comment,Windows ME came preinstalled on my system and to be totally honest, I regret the day i bought it..
Microsoft have got a lot to answer to
fu**in Ba**ar*s
sorry bill but you can see Now how frustrating this error is, maybe you should offer all ME users an upgrade to XP
Seems that ME is a total Pile of CRAP!!!!
if its not one thing its anotheryep, also have Windows ME, IE6 and a Cable Modem.
It all started when i denied Windows explorer access to the internet when the Firewall asked for permission..

It workedFantastic

The problem is caused by your internet connection manager. It uses the universal Plug and Play. Those Windows Me users who are experiencing this problem probably installed a security patch in October which was defective. You can deselect the universal plug and play as Joshua describes. However, there is a new patch that will correct the problem.Go to www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm

I received this error message after clicking shut down on windows me.Dell tech told me its one of the programs in my start up,which turned out to be THE LATEST VERSION OF MSN IM.Since I disabled it I have not received the error message.
