I can't open .exe files on My computer.
Some friends sent me .exe files or I
downloaded files with the ending .exe and
when I try to open them they not only not
open but they seem to change to something
like .vxd Any help?
My computer is a Hewllet Packard with operating system Microsoft Windows Me and processor intelceleron
800 Mhz,Version 4.90.3000

Things to check.
make sure your pc is configured to display known file extensions.
Virus infection.

scan everything that comes across the internet

Try using the (Start - Run) to run or EXEcute them instead of trying to open them.

If you're able to boot into Windows and run programs, then you ARE able to open and run exe files.

Must be something other than a virus. It most virus aren't discriminatory in that they will affect all exe files, not just downloaded ones. Are the file extensions changing to vxd? Or something LIKE vxd? What exactly happens when you click on the executable?

Where are you downloading from? I'm assuming you friend's sending you the files via e-mail. What e-mail client?

Actually that's not necessarily true Jennifer. There are viruses and trojans that'll alter registry keys to prevent the running of some programs but not all of them.
