Ethernet Card!

I just bought an E-Machine w/ Windows ME on it. It also came w/ Realtec RTL8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. I am trying to network this computer with the other computers in my office. I seems as thought the Windows OS doesn't recognize that there is a network card on the system, but when I check Network under Control panel its there and configure with the IP info that I put on there. I show the correct operating lights on the back of the machine, but there is no connection. I get an error message when I check for my network. Any suggestions? I believe I tried them all.
what kind of network? how many computers? what operating systems are installed on the other machines? E machines are not the greatest computers for the office or any off the shelf machines for that matter. Im not a networking expert but these questions should better help someone who is, to answer your question. Good Luck!

Make sure in control panel under Network Options you have LOg onto microosft networks, netbois and TCP/IP drivers for the ethernet card.
Then configure the IP address of the computer then make sure your network workgroup is the same on all computers

Give us the steps you took to connect the pc's. Before you do that make sure you have File And Print sharing installed as well as IP address that is on the same subnet. If not then this is why you cant connect. Also, rather than using Net Neighbourhood try pinging first.

Make sure you have installed both a client and a service on all machines on the network. Also make sure they are under the same workgroup. After you do this, it should automatically recognize the computers on the network, if it doesn't, you computers may not be actually networked together.

The network is a LAN. The other OS's on the network are Windows 95, 98, NT & 2000. I have checked the IP configuration on the other computers with the configuration w/ the ME system and the match up. I have tried to Ping and Telnet to other machines on the network and it has failed. The connection light on the back of the ME machine shows activity. When I go to system properties and click on Device Manager and click on Network Adapters I should see the RealTeck Ethernet card, but I don't. It just says Dail up adapter. When I click on porperties it still does not show the Card. I made sure to add it again, but still doesn't show up. I have considered scrapping the ME OS and putting Windows 98 or 2000 on it. Is that possible, down grading?
