ESS688 sound card problems on Win ME

Hi all! I recently installed Windows ME, and it didn't auto-detect my ESS688 sound card drivers.
I've checked the website, and no drivers specially for Win ME have been released, and I've tried some drivers from previous operating systems - but no luck so far!
If anyone has any suggestions as to what else I could try, that'd be great!

When you say you used previous O/S drivers, do you mean the win 9X drivers from the site or ones you already have? Win 9X SHOULD work but then again this is microsoft!!
Have you tried installing the card manually through the add new hardware option in the control panel?
Finally try removing the card, rebooting then shut down and replace the card either in the same or better a different (if possible) slot. This may seem odd but I have known this to happen in some machines.
Hope you get the card working soon!!

I have had sound with no problem. But today when in an excite chat room, it is telling me that I have a problem with my sound card. That I need to check my configuration or update my drivers. How do I know which to do? And how do I do it? Thanks.
