Was encountering major resource limitations on my wife's computer until I unchecked a bunch of boxes in the startup section of msconfig and ran spykiller. Norton IS 2005 is up to date w/r/t virus definitions and no viruses are present, though outbreak alert doesn't appear to be working properly.
Upon reboot after removing the spyware, I got two errors, the first of which I think can be fixed from what I've found in previous posts on this service, but I'll identify it anyway:
1. wininit.exe missing/unable to load
2. windows cannot find '/P'. You may have typed name incorrectly in run dialog or another open program cannot find a system file. Search for the file. (somewhat paraphrased)
My sense about the first is that while the spykiller removed whatever trojan horse the prior wininit.exe had become (by virtue of a name change), I probably need to replace it with the wininit.exe that is probably on the Windows ME disc that came w/ the computer. In addition, I probably have to delete the relevant line in the win.ini file (never done this before) and remove something from the registry (sounds scary from what I've read about messing with registries). But I've printed out the advise from the other postings and will try these.
Searching does not produce the files in either error message. And I'm stumped by the second error; can't find anything about it anywhere.
Still able to start up OK. Suggestions?
Many thanks.

Read this post and give that a try.

If that does not work try this one.

Allan M., my feeling is that you likely had something removed that was needed. Perhaps you can undo? Not familiar with what can be done with Norton's.
If that option isn't available, can you restore to a previous date (puts the nasties back, but...). Mucking about in the registry is scary unless you are knowledgeable.

Allan.
If all else fails do what I have done on a number of occasions. It is not the cleanest way to go about it but I have found that when all else fails, 90% of the time it works.
Install Win M.E. over it's self. In this regard WinM.E. excels over other OS's.
When you get to the point that asks "do you want to save your existing setting?" say "No" as you do not want to carry the fault over.
When that installation is complete, all your programs will still be there, the only thing is that you will possibly be back to Internet Explorer 5.5 and you may have to download some updates.
I hope this helps you, it did for me just last week.
Regards
Thinking hurts my head
