hi, i'm new to forum and first time seeking help for a computer. It's a 6 years-old pc i have.
I'm getting an error box that pops up with the title: "x" with the message that says "out of memory" says out of memory when i turn on my computer and ti takes me my desktop screen and everything is blank(i.e., my desktop icons are not showing and my start menu, just like what happens when a blue screen comes on in xp). One of the error message i get is titled: c:\windows\scvhost.exe with the following message 'there is not enough free memory to run this program. quit one or more programd and then try'
I'm just stuck on the screen and can't do anything other then watch my mouse icon which keeps showing me it's loading and the following error messages above- when i press ctrl+alt+del i get a task manager showing me lots of names that just says "svchost".

I'm learning to be an electronic/computer engineer.

louis01, how much installed memory do you have? Is it possible you have too many programs running in the background and ME has failed to release memory from them? That was one of the failings of ME. Poor memory management.
One of the most effective things I found to help ME was to install a third party memory manager. I used 'Cacheman' (free). If you haven't done it, I strongly recommend you read/follow the tips found in 'Trev's Tweaks...' @:
http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtw...
Helped me A LOT!

The task manager & svchost would seem to indicate you are running WinXP and not Windows Millennium

... or perhaps Windows 2000 - it's a common misconception (if that is the case)

Thanks for the help guys, i appreciated.
I had to tap F8 to go on safe mode and after that I opened up CCleaner and deleted all the startup programs that shows up when I restart my pc. Next I hit ctrl+alt+del and there was three program open so I deleted scvhost and finally after i did all that i manage to restart my pc normally and GUESS WHAT?, it worked!!! Now i'm off to download the program you recommeded me. Thank you!

Ah, well - svchost is not a component of WinME - however, the default location for this file in 2K/XP is the system32 folder.

If yours is running from c:\windows (and your OS really is ME) then it would seem to be a malicious process, and you would be well advised to scan your system for virus or spyware etc., as merely terminating the process may not be enough

svchost, which i scaned with avg virus scanner, and found out that it was a virus named: 'trojan horse backdoor.generic3.pyi'-- what is that? or what does it do to your pc?

Post this Trojan Horse find on the Security & Virus forum - they would be the best guys to look at this.

Double check whether you are running ME or not first because I see a few doubts have been raised.

Oh, I'd doubted at first if this was ME (stranger things have happened here) but I've reconsidered, based on the location of the file.

Svchost would have to be 'nasty' in this case - even on NT systems, that file runs from system32, not C:\windows.

Sure, repost in S&V if AVG can't fix it, or try an online scan, such as Panda (among others)

Often if there's one bit of malware, there can be more (like ze cockaroach!)

I went to start - run - typed 'winver' and it says that i'm running "Windows millenium edition copyright© 1981-2000, Microsoft corp." I'll get back with later details after I am done running panda virus scanner. Thanks.

Thanks for the confirmation - you might be surprised how many folks have no real idea (and you did kind of mess up your CPU/RAM specs)

It'll be a lengthy scan, but hopefully it will help

Ah, well, it's not so much the amount that concerned me, only the fact that you were unable to fill out that field properly when posting your message.

Years of participation here have (I'm sorry to say) imbued me with a degree of skepticism regarding information reported - no big deal, and not to worry

fyi - 128Mb is more than adequate for WinME - that is double the minimum amount

So... any success in removing this trojan?

Oh, ok - I notice you've posted in S&V:

http://www.computing.net/security/w...

"File name: A0026180.CPY
File path: C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\"

Yes indeed, much like real estate, *location* is everything

As suggested in the new thread, dump your restore points and clean out your temp files

... just a correction to my #12

128Mb is in fact 4 times the minimum requirement of 32Mb

At any rate, "VERY low" only by XP standards
