My computer continually freezes up, and it is a brand new computer (about 3 wks old), it is an HP 1GHZ 128MB 60GB Hd Drive running Windows ME. It freezes up unexpectedly, doesn't seem to matter what program I am in,... My hard drive is not full, I have ran numerous systems tests and all seem to come back that the system is OK. But, my computer locks up continually and I cannot even CTL-ALT-DELETE to shut down, I have to just turn it off. CAN ANYONE HELP???? ANY IDEAS??? I do not have any games on the system exept those that came w/Windows ME.... I am networked with another computer that I share the internet with.

does it freeze up right after a bootup or after a certain period of time or totally random??? Try going to safemode and see if it freezes up. If it freezes in safemode its either a major software problem or a hardware problem (probably either mo.board, processor, or hard drive). Is the fan on your processor working??? Maybe its overheating. You may try going into msconfig and cleaning out everything but the absolutely necessary stuff and see if its something running in the background that's causing it. post feedback I'll help ya out.

It freezes up randomly. Then I cannot even Ctl-alt-delete out of it, I have to power off.

I went into safe mode for about an hour and a half, and it never locked up at all.

It is now 4:24pm and my computer froze up 10 times (I counted).

I moved my CPU out from my desk, so it should recieve more ventilation, so I am not thinking it is the fan (it is running, I checked)

I am running out of ideas.

I am on a cable modem with a NetGear gateway router connecting another machine to the internet...could that cause problems? hmmm. Or does Windows ME have problems on cable modems?

Thanks for any input. I am going crazy w/these problems.

well if it doesn't lock in safemode then its definitely a software problem. You may try unplugging the modem from the computer or the disconnecting the network, that could cause it. You may wanna check to make sure you have updated drivers, also go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get updates and see if that helps. Other than that I would recommend reinstalling windows. Random lockups like that suck to troubleshoot, its hard to pinpoint it. If you have any more info post it i'll see if I can think of anything.

When a hp is purchased they turn everything on.. you need to call hp and ask for their help... they will have you go into msconfig and turn off some stuff that is running. I had to do this for a computer that was only a day old. There is not a 800 number to hp, so you will have to do a long distant call.

Hope this helps you out.

If you are using AOL... then THIS IS THE FIX: If you are using a Microsoft Windows Driver Model (WDM) driver for your modem, the connection to America Online (AOL) may be dropped, and your computer may stop responding (hang) after 10 to 15 minutes of use or you may get a 0E error. The fix can be found at...

I also get the same error message, I have an HP 850MHz 128 MB SDRAM w/30 GB. I am hooked up with DSL and use winpoet adapter for windows ME. After I get the original error message Error OE: 0028: C0012D2c, and hit "any key", I get the following :
OD: 0246: 17747FB (same as you) I have called HP and they had me do a "msconfig" it did not help. I also have the problem that my computer does not shut down properly. when I shut it down it will "hang" and only have a cursor blinking in the top left corner. ( I already went into the Bios and changed the setting to "auto") this is really getting irritating! does anyone have any clue how I can find out what the message means? I will try to go to the site mentioned in the previous message, eventhough I am not an AOL user. maybe it might help!

After reading the previous messages, it looks like the common denominator is HP. I am having the same problem with this annoying error message (Error: OE : 0028 : C0012D2C). I have a brand new HP9870, Pentium 4, 1.3 GHz, 128 RDRAM, 60 GHz HD. I am running peer-to-peer networking with DSL modem. I have ran all sorts of diagnostics, downloaded all available Windows and hardware updates, and have turned off all non-essentials from MSCONFIG...all to no avail. The error appears to happen randomly...especially when using IE5.5 and OE5.5. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I also have an HP XE783 It runs at 750 MHZ. I recieve the OE:0028:C0012D2C and the 0D:0246:014F47FB Error. I have had this computer for 4 months and the problem started a few days ago. I locks up constantly. I turned off hibernate. I uninstalled Naptster software. I read that the OD:0246:014F47FB error is caused by Napster Beta Software. This did not help. I have a cable modem. So the HP and Cable/DSL is a common denominator. Please Let me know if anybody fines a solution. I have not contacted HP, I am afraid that they would give me a run around.

same error codes on a HP6735, Celeron 633MH, 64 RAM. Worked with HP customer service and their community forum group for 4 1/2 months trying to pinpoint the problem. They had me clear master boot record, reformat and reload, etc. No differences at all: random blue screens with the OE 0028 C0012D2C and then the OD 0246 014F47FB. Then they sent me another 6735. Literally the same problem right ot of the box, no loaded personal software. Now have a different HP Pentium machine for 3 days and it just happened again. I'm on a Prodigy dialup and thought it might be my phone line. Was thinking that a switch to cable would solve my problem till reading this total string. Hope someone can definitively figure this out while I still have some sanity! Thanks, Harris in Clarksville TN

Well, i guess you can scratch out the HP denominator, because I am running a month old Dell Pentium 4, 1.3ghz with 256mb RAM and 60gb hard drive, and I get the exact same errors. Mine usually occur at the moment I click the mouse to close a program or browse to a different webpage (using IE 5.5). If I happen to have an mp3 or other soundfile playing, it also hangs and constantly repeats. Cont-Alt-Del doesn't work for me either. I am also on cable modem, using a 3Comm ethernet card. Philips Acoustic Edge sound card and ATI Radeon 64mb vid card.

I uninstalled McAfee Virus Shield, I have been surfing the Web for 4 hours without any problems. I usually to the Error OE:0028:C0012D2C within 20 minutes. It appears the McAfee Virus Shield may have been the problem. I think it is a JavaScript application. Try uninstalling McAfee Virus Shield and see if the problem goes away. You can re-install it later if it does not work. Everybody give it a try and see if the problem goes away, let everybody know your results.

Am running McAfee BUT have downloaded most recent patches from them - maybe these fix the problem we've all been experiencing? Will let you know if/when I get the error message again.

I've been using ActiveShield since December 1999 with no problems. In the last couple of months we added a DSL connection and I started having all kinds of problems with my system freezing up while using IE or OE.

I've finally traced the freezes to ActiveShield. When ActiveShield is disabled I can go on forever without a system freeze. When it's enabled I'm having to power cycle the PC to restart multiple times per day.

Is there some sort of fix for this? I'd really prefer having ActiveShield enabled if I can fix the problem. But, rebooting every 5 minutes is really frustrating and it will stay disabled until I can get this figured out.

Check your properties and change ActiveShield from scanning all files to scanning programs and documents. This should eliminate almost all freezes and slowdowns.

I have the same problem too, but on an ordinary dial up modem. ActiveShield worked perfectly until a couple of months ago. I have to disable ActiveShield to avoid system crashes. I would love if I could find an answer.

I too have the same problem. The upgrade to DSL has resulted in both machines we use freezing up. I just wiped one machine and updated ActiveShield on Tuesday and it is still freezing up.

I am trying the suggestion to change the properties to scan programs and documents and not 'all files'. Will let you know what happens.

I am now back to my original problem of Internet Explorer 5.5 crashes. I periodically recieve the error "caused error in User.exe". Internet Explorer errors. I just restart IE. I do not have to reboot. It is not a major problem, just a nusiance. If any body else is having the same problem please E-mail and let me know.

Hi all, well it looks like McAfee ActiveShield might have really been the problem. I deactivated McAfee and its been more than 24 hours of hard internet usage since then. (for me the blue screen was about once a day random) so, so far, so good. Thanks to everyone for their help in narrowing the possibilities down and finally isolating it to McAfee. Now I just hope we're all right (both with McAfee and THE machines)! Oh, and to replace McAfee ActiveShield since 3 April, I've been using a free program, Inoculate Personal Edition. Found it at http://antivirus.cai.com. Good luck to all. Harris in Clarksville TN

I also have been getting the OE:0028:C0012D2C and OD:0246:015F47FB but got a new sequence today = 0E:0028:C0012D2C then OD:09B7:015F75BC then File Name:VMM(01)+00013DF9 then OE:0028:C0014DF9 then a black screen then SYSTEM IS BUSY WAITING FOTH THE CLOSE PROGRAM DIALOGUE BOX - then a fatal lock-up. Does the OE preface stand for Outlook Express or something else. I have MSN so my Outlook is diabled and I get e-mail thru MSN Explorer. What are the potential problems with changing to scan programs and docs rather than all files? If this is the solution, is it ok to leave it there or must we change to a new virus protection?

CHARLIE---I think OE stands for Original Equipment - but not positive. Also have been told that the 0028 means software problem. Since I have changed my properties on McAfee to scan program files and documents havent had another problem. Not sure about your question of needing diff virus protection, I emailed McAfee but have not recd an answer back. Also if you have the MSN Explorer that allows diff users I think that the email through that is web based so it helps to also protect against viruses. I only was receiving the error message 0028: C0012D2C. the others I am not sure about at all. you can contact HP thru the help menu and check w/them but they are not always accurate either. good luck.

I'd first like to thank Harris for sending me this site. I've used so many dial-a-tech and online tech services from microsoft and such, ALL HAD NO CLUE what the problem was, and wasted my $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and time....
What's the purpose of a computer coming up with an error code if noone knows what that code is anyway? Well, I also have McAfee running full speed, with an 1GHz HP, and a cable modem, I get the errors 0E: 0028: C0012D2C 0D: 0246: 014F47FB also with nothing left to do but an improper shutdown... I'm not to computer literate, but I went to msconfig like one of the suggestions and went to "selective startup" and unchecked ANYTHING that had to do with McAfee and restarted my computer....so far no blue for me, 28 hours and counting...thanks a mil, I'll keep ya posted if something changes.

One thing I forgot to add..I did not have this problem as often when I only had IE5.0 when I did the windows update and took 5.5 service pack one the errors occurred more frequently, I uninstalled, but it seemed to have done its damage...as everyone else it seems to only occur when surfing the net... staring at a site does nothing, but selecting a link seems to trigger the error. Either way, I'm almost at 29 hours of no blue, hehe, wish me luck.

It's McAfee. We installed it, were using IE 5.5, and after it's on awhile (it must do something that eats away at memory), it randomly freezes, sometimes where we had to pull the plug. Took the advice of the poster who said change setting from Scall everything to scan programs and documents. Rebooted, and it never happened again, even after about 12 hours of Internet use. We didn't get the error message, either. We just froze. The smoking guns were IE 5.5 and McAfee, both loaded the same night.

THANKS to those who solved this, especially given what HP had some people do to no avail.

You guys are great!

Thank you so much for the info! I have an HP7840 with dial-up internet and McAfee. The blue screen errors happened all the time when I first got the computer (Feb 2001). Then they went away, which may or may not coincid with when my McAfee trial ran out in May. I subscribed about a month later and everything had been fine! Much to my annoyance, the errors started up again in the last two weeks. I just changed my settings to scan program files and documents, so hopefully that'll do it.

I would just like to say that I was as frustrated as everyone else. We need to really think for a minute before we bad mouth HP. They are really only a common denominator here only because McAfee really has no clue. Nor does Norton. These companies think money and contracts first. We just buy this crap and the hell with us. Pay us to fix something that cost $1000 - $4000. PC makers have to deal with so many companies to build the damn PC it is impossible to build one wtih no problems, but who suffers? The customer. Believe me some times I feel like tossing this piece of crap out the window. Then I think of how far we have come with technology. Still we need better customer service form PC makers, Anti-virus companies, and ISP's. We deserve it for keeping this industry alive as long as it has been. I am on my 5th PC.

Good Luck to you all,

Steve

Well I just finished reading all 40+ responses and we all have the same problem. What I've been able to figure out so far is that this error started right after I updated to IE 5.5 +SR2 and McAfee's Active Shield.
The error occurred randomly when you start surfing IE.
What I figured out so far is that it's a problem with McAfee Active Shield (Online Clinic). After I turned off Active Shield I don't seem to get the error.
But of course this brings up to the real question???? What's the point of using McAfee is you can't run the Clinic Software.
Now I'm not even going to try and figure out what MS really included with the IE 5.5 update other than forcing everyone to use Windows Media Player.
By the way I posted the error question on the McAfee Forum page, but still have not received a response.
Thanks for reading this and hope that someone has a real answer/fix to this problem.

Heh, this is almost amusing...ALMOST. I've been having the same error problems on both of my pc's, which both have McAfee, and internect explorer 5.5. I'm beginning to wonder if the McAfee is more trouble than its worth, since we've been careful and never have once gotten a virus.
My problem started earlier this year when we installed McAfee vShield. What they don't tell you about it is that once its in there, you can't uninstall it without deleted files that windows needs to operate. My father uninstalled it anyway on his pc, and it basically killed it. He got it up and running again but it hasn't been the same since.
Then when I tried to upgrade to McAfee Virus Scan Active Shield, the Virus vShield and they had conflicts in the computer. It said to uninstall the vShield, but I can't do that either cuz of the windows files. So I finally just disabled the vShield and crossed my fingers.
Then just a couple days ago we began having really bad 0E: 0028: C0012D2c errors, and this has been at least a month after installing the McAfee Active Shield. So I came here, and what do you know, McAfee's done it again!
So I'm going to try and set it to just scanning program files instead of all files and hope it works. I had to totally disable the Active shield and the vshield on my other pc, so this is the only one out of three(which are networked) that has protection.
McAfee is REALLY beginning to annoy me -.-
Thanks for the help!

Have had the same problems on my HP, it happens so often that me and my roomates have named it the HP blue balls. I am going to try the McAfee thing because everything else has failed. re-instaled everything twice, called HP, called Staples, turned off all the crap that was running, swore at it, kicked it, gave it the finger, blamed it on ME, and wanted to kick bill gates's a$$. So if this does not work, then i will be busy inventing even more swear words and throwing darts at a picture of Billy. thanks!

Does changing the level of ActiveSHield protection from "all" to "program..only" fix the problem with HP's not shutting down correctly?

Thanks

Well, add me to the long list. I have been going nuts, with this fatal error or blue screen etc. I have just made the change on Mcafee from all programs. Has anyone heard from them about the problem?
Thanks so much.

Very interesting. Have a custom build PC: AMD K-7 Athlon 256Ram with Aopen56k PCI dial up modem since december 2000. Installed McAfee within a week after purchase and have lockups ever since or from the very beginning, don't exactly remember. Have been searching for the cause with the seller and suspected McAfee about 2 months ago because most lockups occured while online either with Outlook Xpress or IE 5.5. Freezes mostly while just scrolling on a page or clicking away a screen. Also sometimes freezes though while not online and nobody is even using it. Mostly it just freezes and then sometimes ctrl-alt-del doesn't work, sometimes I get the blue screen and the same error mesages. In order to test the McAfee hypothesis I disabled it (2 months ago) and it immediately locked up 3 times in the next 20 minutes which to me ruled this out as the problem. Interestingly: in the very next email I received it caught a virus, the very first virus I ever received in the 8 months that I had been using McAfee. And the next week it caught another virus.
I still have a gut feeling that the problem is with the McAfee software, so I will try to limit the scans to programs and documents.
Do you also have problems downloading updates from mcafee? The site mentioned something about hanging while trying to download but I cannot find that information anymore. Just the last 2 days I could not get the latest update. It would hang at "automatic download after 1 second", that is, it would not count the last second and continue.
In the contacts I had with McAfee about these problems and their chaotic website (with different flashing commercials about making your computer go faster) they asked for patience...

I don't have an HP nor use McAffee. But I get:

OD:0028:C0012D2A

When I hit the disconnect button.

My machine worked perfectly OK until I got Win Me. THen Outlook Express refused to shut down properly. That is, it shut down but when you tried to open it again it would not and then when you tried to restart the computer everything froze.

I upgraded to a DSL connection and IE 6 and this seems to have stopped the Outlook Express problem. Except, often when I disconnect I get the Blue Screen.

I have to switch off the computer and restart. In fact I nearly always have to switch off the computer since it usually freezes when trying to shut windows down.

When I try to ctrl alt delete I get thrown to another blue screen with error messages referring to vdx numbers which people tell me are to do with my video card. I've got the latest drivers from the maker so in theory it should be OK.

Any ideas for solving this appreciated?

Thanks Harris and everyone else involved. I've installed a Windows fix for the freezes and hang-ups and uninstalled McAfee and everything works great. No blue-screen error messages. Nada. Thanks again!
