encountered this problem after updating win me os from microsoft update website. my laptop boots up, stop and displays "Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows." Is there anyway I can make my make my laptop run without reinstalling win me? to preserve my old settings and run my proprietary softwares that had already been installed. Can I upgrade to win xp to preserve my old setup just to make my installed softwares work again? Any help, comments and professional suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks

1) MSKB 299313 - "Error Loading Explorer.exe" Error Message When You Attempt to Start Windows.
If not, try...
2) MSKB 299296 - Error Message: Error Loading Explorer.exe You Must Reinstall Windows.

That type of problem sometimes occurs when you do not do a reboot before starting the Windows Update process and/or have an error during the reboot after the update.
Try booting into Safe Mode and see if you have the same problem.
Boot from a Windows ME startup diskette and run ScanDisk C: to check for file system errors on the disk drive. You could have had a disk write error on the disk drive and it did not show up until you did the Windows Update. You can also check that the Windows folder and Explorer.exe is OK.
If necessary, you can install Windows ME over the top of itself with the CAB files and SETUP.exe program in the C:\Windows\Options\Install folder. To do this you need your "ProductKey" from the install CD jacket or from the Registry. In your case, you may have to boot from a Windows diskette in order to use the DOS EDIT program and find the ProductKey in the C:\Windows\SYSTEM.DAT file and to start the Setup program. After doing this, it is necessary to do a REPAIR of IE and then redo most of the Windows Updates again.
