Hey Azla!As to last Q;No.Pity cos it should
sort your system, start point anyway.Scan Disk
&SCAN REG fix alot.U can run scandisk in safe
but I hope you have a floppy "start up disk".
If not make one in + - programs(control pnl).
Just click Startup Disk&follow instructions.
This floppy will help, insert& power up.You'll
get a start up menu, select with or witout CDROM.
Wait for "A" prompt;Type scandisk/all.Wait 4
"A" again.type scanreg/fix.That'll do 4 now.

-on with disk in;+ select 2"without CDROM".
After scandisk &@ the"A", eject floppy & hit
Ctrl/Alt/Delete together.This will take you
thru start sequence again!WHEN COMP BEEPS hold down Alt=this will take you into another
menu.Leave it (30secs)-see if it starts!If
not repeat all steps&do the scanreg/fix thing
Repeat all steps.Later....

Thanks Deodar!
I have just gotten back to check for responses here. And these are just a few things I've tried & NOTHING! So aggrevating!! I have a basic boot disk (floppy). When inserted & booted I get a screen that doesn't allow me to do much. It has restore in areas, but I can't get anything to highlight or allow me to click on it. There is a prompt within that mess that has something to do w/partitions?? Can't get to that either...Inserted my Norton's recovery NAV 1-4 floppy's. It worked, scanned everything, took like 2.5 hours. Also, downloaded the active@killdisk.exe to a floppy, to wipe the sucker clean & try to start over, never using Windows ME again. I will purchase XP Home w/SP2 if I can get this machine to work, b-4 I put the hammer to it!!! Hope to hear back soon!!! Thanks again for responding!!!

when I get to that point I usually just put the original windows disk back in and reinstall windows.
I hope you can get all your personal files off of the computer onto a cd first or they will be deleted during reinstall
also if you have a partitioned disk drive you can try to move your personal files to the drive that isnt the windows boot drive. move them off "C"drive
and then reinstall the windows using the windows CD those files should be safe on the other drive
you will have to reinstall all of the drivers and software that you have put on the computer since you originally set it up
like scanner and printer software and windows updates
But the machine will work as good as new

That's the Basicdos solution!;difficult cos
you aren't getting into DOS with floppy. Can't
format from within Windows,far as I know.A
'setup'Would be ideal-but you need that DOS
prompt,& a good book(1hr min).Researched all
sources,even ran "Setup"on my box;restored
missing files, rebuilt Registry so might doit
for you,but anyone know how to install without DOS? Dont think so.... Are you SURE thats the
ME boot disk?

The original windows CD that came with your computer put it in the cd drive and turn the computer off then resart the computer
the cd disk should take over and ask if you want to reinstall windows or whatever other options
if you reinstall like this read my other post for all the reinstalls you will have to do of software like AOL DSL camera and such and it will delete all files on the installation drive if you have a partitioned disk the other virtual drives wont be changed
use the key board if the mouse dont work

Also if you want to look at the cd disk with dos
CD D:\ enter key
dir/w enter key
will display the d drive contents
any file with an .exe will run when you type its name and press enter

OK! I put in the Reinstallation CD for Windows ME....seemed to be going kosher, then BANG, this SUWIN message/error pops up & says proggy is going to terminate if canceled. Tried to click the ignore prompt & nothing??? Clicked cancel & poof, GONE. Now, even when trying to enter safe mode, it runs a scandisk of C drive, then ends up w/a grey screen, that has safe mode typed in each of the 4 corners of the screen. Frozen like an icicle!!! Trying to decide which size hammer to use on it? Called Dell for tech support. HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA....the hold time was horrid, then all Joe could do was surf the web himself looking for answers, then the inevidible....he could pass me on to more advanced tech support, & that it was NOT FREE!!!! Trying to avoid anymore cost!!! And would love to see Windows ME completely wiped from my life...
Anymore ideas, I would appreciate...

the CD was recognized and was starting to install windows or gave you the option? This is good.
The suwin thing shouldnt be comming up all required drivers should be on the windows cd that came with your Computer if it gives you the option to skip the file skip it
If it gives you the option to reformat harddrive and reinstall all programs to factory take it (tell me what choices the CD gives you?)
One reason that this could be happening is that you have added some hardware to your computer since you bought it
like a scanner a network card , modem, camera printer, disconnect all the easy ones first and retry the disk
you may have to physically remove any or all of these peripheral devices because the CD that comes with the computer is usually only set for a specific make and model in other words they dont want you to upgrade all your windows with one new computer
computer.
also turn off all antiviraus programs
Did you say this computer no longer runs in safe mode? do you get a dos prompt?

Hey basicdos !! Thanks so much for your replies. I'm just now reinstalling & running the setup CD for Windows ME that came w/my Dell....AGAIN! Just seeing if I missed a prompt somewhere?? Safe mode will not boot. And I have also inserted my Basic Rescue Boot Floppy. I think somewhere when using the A-floppy, I saw a prompt for DOS, is that of any help for me??? I just checked the status of running the Windows ME CD for reinstallation, & the "SUWIN" error box is up once again, not even halfway thru the setup. Says An error has occured in your application. If you choose to Ignore, you should save your work in a new file. If you choose Close, your application will terminate. The Ignore button doesn't work....& I know if I click Cancel, the set up will close out completely???? I use Windows & Yahoo Messengers, if you think helping me that way would work better. Just so stumped here. I don't even get a normal boot, not happening, nothing! Driving me bonkers here!!! Thanks so so very much!!

First question,
Do you care if your computer loses all of the information on it?

Try this and tell me what happens,
dont put the floppy in just put the CD in turn the computer off completely
pull the plug after it shuts off
plug it back in and turn it on.

is the CD recognized?
Is the computer booting from the CD?
What type of menu comes up?
Does that SUWIN thing come up now?
do you get a black dos type screen with a blinking curser?

what should happen is...
the computer should boot to the CD and it should have a simple menu program asking what you want it to do?
reinstall windows?,
recover or repair windows?, which will most likely just cause more hedaches
reformat hardrive and reinstall all software including windows?,(best choice)

these are pretty standard choices if they come up you can probably reset the computer to how you got it originally "you will loose all personal data"(this is why you should always put your personal files on cd every few months or so)

More questions...
can you save your data in safe mode to cd or floppy?
can you access your hard drive with dos using the floppy recover disk?
type... "DIR" without the quotes, at the dos prompt does the dos screen display your files?

some things that might obstruct the CD are... your Bios being set so that the CD is not a bootable drive
a cd rom malfunction, I dont think so in your case
A program error or virus stopping the boot cd

Let me know.

Bye the way, if you go to lycos.com type in suwin error a whole bunch of information comes up, to much for me to sift through but if you want to give it a try before reinstalling your software check it out.

OK~ !! So, I got so mad at it, I just said #%*#^$ & stuck in my Windows XP disk that came w/this Dell I'm using right now. Not sure if I'm allowed to do that, but HEY! It worked & loaded XP like a dream!! re-loaded my other factory CD's w/all my proggy's, utilities, drivers, etc. Installed the new Norton's AV. Still have to install my cable modem, router, printer...Skipped the XP registration section, was thinking I may have an issue w/that once I get back online & try to run an update for Windows, since the product has already been registered for this PC???? What's your take on that? Do, I need to purchase a seperate version of XP, since I'm running the same product key on this Dell??? Can I buy another copy & load it to override this one?? Hoping I didn't just create another HUGE mess! Your thoughts please! And thanks again so much for trying to get me thru this nitemare!

You shouldnt have a problem updating at the microsoft.com site
Im pleasently surprised that you were able to use the other CD, I beleive that windows looks for some basic installed windows operating system when you install the CD so as long as windows was there originaly, they figure you payed for it

Im interested, what brand of computer did you load the CD onto were they both DELL?

anyway glad it worked out for you.
Remember to load all your personal, Music, work files and pictures onto CDs for a back up and update them every so often.

Again, I want to thank you for all your responses to my mis-fortunes dealing w/Windows ME. Yes, they are both Dell PC's, each had different operating systems. Both having the same now, & operating even better than ever! :o) I will keep you posted as to how it goes once I get online & try to run the Windows update. I will probably add that one w/the newly installed XP back into my network & get online sometime today with it. Have a great day!!
