I just recently built a system with a piii 733 an Asus CUV4X motherboard soundblaster live 3Com Ethernet Card and Geforce 2 MX video Card. I get a windows protection error about one in 4 times that i try to shut down. Under system Information/components/problem devices it lists two problems...the first is ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering...and it says error code 22...I dont know what error code 22 is. The second is Client for Microsoft Networks and its error code is 10. I assume this error is due to the fact i have it set up for a cable modem but dont have it connected right now. Does anyone know this error or where i could find out what these codes are? There are no conflicts in the device manager but I am sharing IRQ's even though I have nothing hooked up except speakers...scanner and printer arent hooked up. Any help would be appreciated.

Error Code 22 is your Soundblaster. Originally that card was designed to use 2 IRQ's, one for proctected mode and one for real mode. Now that real mode is gone the card still shows the porting. Hopfully CT will have drivers out this month. Gateway has S Blaster drivers on their site.
Anyone with a SB card has erroe 22, this machine I'm using now has it. MS says not to sweat it.Now I belive that your issue is in your network config. Keep in mind that I am here and you are there. Start with removing all of your adapters and protocols from Net Config. Next shut down the system. Openit and remove your NIC. Boot the machine and see if the same error persists. If no than reinstall the card in a different slot. On the card issue I typically configure the slots this way. 0=AGP, 1=Any other Video related card, 2=NIC, 3=SCSI or IDE controller, 4= Sound, 5=modem or multimedia, 6=modem or sound dependent on what types of slot that you have. I know that board well and inevetablly you will be running. You will more or less have to play the move the card around game. Make sure that you are using the current BIOS, I had that board but I realized that VIA chips and BeOS dont mix so I opted for the CUSL-2 with the 815 c/s.
I felt that your board preformed a little bit better under windows. Oh also download and install the new 4 in 1 VIA driver set from the ASUS site. I don't know if you allready did that or not. As I recall when I originially configured my sys w/ that board I recived many error codes than after I installed the updated BIOS and 4 in 1 drivers everthin stablized. NOTE: Don't install the PC probe software thing. It misreports voltages like crazy. I easily ran a P-3, 700 @ 933Mhz. on that baby. Another thing to note is that board will allow you to flash the BIOS from within Windows. How cool is that??!!!! You are going to be OK.....Oh yea, you disabled the onboard audio to rite? ( I'm not privy to what version you bought)....Happy ASUS,ingAll of these comments are based on the hardware only, I still think ME is a waste of money and needs lots of work!!

i didnt flash the bios because i wasnt sure it was the problem. I havent downloaded the 4 in 1 drivers and didnt know that putting cards in different slots would change things. Could the 4 in 1 drivers cause the windows protection error? Thanks for the help by the way...

Thank you, any time!
Take out all non essential cards and devices,Flash the BIOS, Install the drivers from asus.com then add your cards one at a time...also I realixe that this sounds counter intuitive but set PLUG & PLAY OS to NO in the BIOS, when you flash the BIOS be sure to hold down the delete key than the first thing you do is set everything to default....then fiddle with your settings.
I have flashed a zillion BIOS'es basically it is a program that reprograms the CMOS, unless you have a power failure you can not really screw anything up....on that board you can do it within Windows however if your system is unstable and you don't really trust it than I recomend doing it from a boot disk. All that you need in the form of hardware to do a flash is a floppy disk/drive, the MB in question, power, processor & RAM(VID & MONITOR TOO)& keyboard OK, OK the whole dammmm computer...LOL
You can leave the flash utility and .bin file in a folder on your HD, boot from a floppy and CD to the flash utility on your HD too.....any DOS will work for this.
The drivers that you download contain the software that handels drive cashing and alike for your UDMA 100 controller.....When you get into these situstions keep your cool....then throw drivers and software at the problem untill it goes away....LOL
Basicly when you set up systems you really can't DO anything, simply put,"You put the parts whear they go, put the disk in answer some questions than the software does the rest!" When the software can not solve the issue, than you strip the system down to the least amount of hardware and work your way from there. The config will work or fail!
The real work is done between the relationship of the BIOS to the OS and the OS to the drivers. For better or worse the system BIOS is the key to computers. This programmer in China named Yoshi, writes a lot of these Assembly Language codes. One day I thought computers were more than that.. NO, the machine language makes all of the other overlaing processes possible to begin with. Imagine the difficulty involved with these basic codes. To write them you almost must be a "super geneous!" I wouls venture to guess that you would whear two hats, one of a programmer and the other of a chip engineer. For as complicated as motherboards are it is difficult to understand why the are one of the least expensive computer components that can be bought?? OK....fell into a tangent....going nuts....CRACK PIPE TO EARTH!!!!!!.........LOL Let me know what happens next. If you aren't sure stop whatever you are doing and think it through or get back in here and I will help you out!!! It would be good if you had another PC to use???(While your doing all of this stuff) Let me know....LATER

Actually i ahve another computer...thats the one im on now. I figured id try the new 4 in 1 drivers first then if it still has the protection errors id flash the bios (never done it before) I live with my girlfriend and have some stuff going on in my life so I just get to my computer when I can... I wonder tho...how can a BIOS be bad when i just bought the board? Can they update and inpove it that quickly? Well thanks again Im off to try the new 4 in 1 drivers Ill be in touch.
shane
ps do you work with computers? Im planning on going to college for some computer certificates in january...just curious because i help people with their computers but it seems just when I feel i know a lot...bam..i realise theres so much more to learn...sigh...=)
