I am having problems using the Philips CD-R/RW recorder (Philips Cdd4801 CD-R/RW) that came installed on my Compaq Presario 5108US computer with the Windows Me OS. Repeated attempts to resolve the issue with Compaq offered no satisfactory results and Roxio (Easy CD Creator software that came with the computer) offers no technical support unless you purchase directly from them. The problem I am experiencing is simple, when I insert a brand new CD (either a CD-RW orCD-R), I get the error message,"PLEASE INSERT A CD WITH SUFFICIENT SPACE INTO THE RECORDER". I am using the two CD's that came bundled with my computer (Verbatim CD-R DataLifePlus 1x-16x Speed 74MIN 650MB and Verbatim CD-RW DataLifePlus 2x-4x Speed 74MIn 650MB). I am trying to create a data CD with a total of 836.1KB, so there should be plenty of space available. I even reduced the file size down to 14.9KB abd still received the same error message. I might add, I also tried to burn an audio CD with similar results. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Easy CD Creator software and its' drivers and still no luck. In addition to all of this, I have downloaded the most current update to this software. Any suggestions or recommendations anyone might have, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

-Your problem might indicate that there is not enough free space on the hard drive (the software may be attempting to cache data into temp files on the hard drive). Try emptying the Windows Temp folder and the Recycle Bin to free up hard drive space.

-Use high quality media. Low or poor quality media may not be detected properly by the CD-RW drive or software.

-Using the Disc-at-Once mode when creating your CDs may reduce the amount of space needed to close the disc and can help eliminate this error.

-Another possibility is caused by the DirectCD program, please try the following:
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del, highlight DirectCd and click on end task.

Hi BerMuDa. I tried all of your suggestions except for using higher quality CD's and I still received the same error message about the blank CD not having "sufficient" space. I will purchase some new CD's and see if that helps. Any recommendations as to what is a good brand of CD to buy? Thanks again for your help.

Try "Sony", "Maxwell", "Philips", I think Staples has some good discount this week.

I would suggest to buy a small pack of CDs (about 5) so you don't waste your money if this soultion didn't work.

Hi Texascowboy.
Roxio have quite a good support section on their website which I found to be very helpful when I had a similar problem to yours. Try this link:

I had that problem when I bought a new Dell a
couple of years ago, if I remember correctly I
had to install another program from the same
CD, I think it was CD Direct, and since then I
have not had a problem.

Hello everyone. Thanks to all of you (Sue, Bermuda, Blueheeler and Tom) for your suggestions and willingness to help. I have tried all of the suggestions to date, but still get the error message, "Please insert a CD with sufficient space into the recorder". I am at a loss as to what to do now. If anyone has any other suggestions, they would be very much appreciated. Thanks again.

I have a PHILIPS CDD4801 CD-R/RW also that came with my compaq presario 5008CA. My problem is that when I put a rewritable (memorex 4X) it either pretends there is no cd inserted or my entire comp freezes, no longer responding to ctrl alt delete and the cd won't eject.
