I have a SONY VAIO (PCV-LX800/700 (V28.0)) running Windows ME. Upon startup, I get an error message: "Dw has caused an error in DW.exe. Dw will now close." Major or minor problem? What to do?

Thanks for any help.

DW.exe is a feedback tool used by Microsoft to analyze and develop fixes for instances of crashes on users' computers. DW.exe ships with all editions of Office and is installed by default with Office XP.

Don't know if that info gives you a clue on what to do, but I would suggest looking for the file on the Office CD and then copying it on top of the one on your HD.

Hello. I am also getting the error message when I startup my computer running Windows ME. I just started happening today, and I found the file DW.exe in a file marked "DOWNLOADWARE." I'm not sure why it is there, since you are reporting it to be standard on all Microsoft Office systems. My CPU seems to be running at a much slower speed since I've gotten the error. How do you suggest doing a selective startup? I would really like to get this problem dealt with soon. Thank you!

It's a spyware program in the startup caused Media Load Installer
It appears when you download Kaza or other programs that include spyware.
You can either remove medialoadinstaller within msconfig,go into the registry and delete hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\medialoadinstaller
or
go into add/remove programs within the control panel and remove mediaload

I went to run, then msconfig then start up and unchecked the medialoader. Even after unchecking medialoader I still cant get games to load like big money on msn.com. What is the medialoader ? Did this come with Kazaa that I downloaded which appears to have created all these problems? If I delete medialoader will it cause problems else where on my pc? Any help here would be appreciated.

I found the Downloadware folder on my daughter's computer & as well as the Dw file is a folder called temp & inside this is a file ml.exe (media loader).
The add/remove programmes seems best method as it does not involve registry editing, assuming of course that it appears in add/remove programmes (will check later).
Make sure you export a copy of of the registry before editing if you decide on that method.

Incidentally did anyone else get a dial up box appear before the Dw message?

I had the same thing.. I installed Kazaa but when I removed it and use ADAWARE to remove the spyware my system give me an error message when it boots up. What I did; I use find and type DW.EXE. you will see two of them.. the one officially done by microsoft and the other done by another company. I remove the dw.exe made by another company (not microsoft) it's red color and look odd. I deleted it and now my pc is working just fine. I hope this help you with the problem.

To Fix this error.
-Click on start-->RUN
-type in "MSCONFIG"
-Goto the startup tab in the top right hand corner and look for an entry named
MEDIA LOAD INSTALLER - uncheck it.
It will surely fix the issue. Trust me..

I just read all of the above messages concerning dw.exe and decided to investigate all of the advice. Lo and behold!! It's a form of Trojan virus. I'll give you what I found. Then go to your files and look for downloadware, check out your add/remove program for downloadware and if it's there, get rid of it. It's not part of Microsoft Office at all. If you find this all hard to believe, look around for yourself. Here's what I found that got me started.
"Symantec Security Response - W32.HLLW.DW
W32.HLLW.DW is a Trojan that copies itself to A:\Dw.exe and %Windows%\DWServise.exe. It continuously attempts to copy itself to drive."

Hello,
Any tips how to solve my 'dw.exe' problem.
My home computer locks up as it boots, including both keyboard and mouse, so cannot attempt any of the fixes where I need to use either.
When switched on, as it boots up, the computer does a scandisk for drive C, but doesn't any longer recognise that there is a drive D too.
After that, the computer locks up while the desktop is being formed. Most icons appear but not the whole taskbar, and no background.
At some point in this process, the dw.exe error message appears.
The computer is then fully locked up and I can only switch it off.
Any tips would be appreciated, if only to get the computer a bit further along before it locks up, so I can try some of the fixes.

For three days now, I have been having the same ""announcement"":Dw provocó un error en DW.EXE. - Dw se cerrará
I live in Mexico City and I am panicking, my instructor told me it was a Windows failure and that it would be best to place the restore cd, and do it all over again.
This happened after I downloaded the temperature WeathearBug, maybe it's just a coincidence. Would it be good to take that off? Thank you all....elenali.....

The DW.exe crash reporting tool reports all crash instances to Microsoft for use in debugging the Office XP applications, although the user has the choice to not report any given crash. DW.exe ships with all editions of Office and is installed by default with Office XP. DW.exe starts automatically whenever a crash is detected. The application that crashes is automatically shut down before relevant crash data can be lost. DW.exe captures user settings related to the crash from the registry and the current memory block where the application is running. DW.exe then packages the data into a compressed cabinet file and submits the information to Microsoft for analysis.

Corporate Error Reporting is a tool for use by administrators to manage the cabinet files created by DW.exe. Corporate Error Reporting allows businesses to redirect crash reports to a file server within an organization instead of submitting the information directly to Microsoft crash-reporting servers over the Internet. It also allows administrators to limit what gets sent to Microsoft.

I just read all of the comments here as I was getting the same dw.exe problem. I did my little fix and upon reboot, I got the message that I was using the selective startup utility. I've never seen that box before and I had to click "OK" to go on. I hope that is nothing to worry about. I hope this stops the problems. I also downloaded kazaa recently and am ticked enough to stop using them and uninstall that program! ugh.

Dw has caused an error in dw.exe is really easily solved if you just go into start>run>msconfig>startup and uncheck mediaload installer and kazAA. the program will still run and windows will be fine.

DW.exe is spyware, all this newnet and gator and programs are spyware. Using MSconfig will stop them from loading on startup, but i would strongly recommend removing these from the registry also, search for gator and newnet and delete everything you find. Also for that selective startup msg, its displayed after you use msconfig, just lick on dont show this msg again.

Your friendly neighborhood saint here. I am letting you all know that the registry info is correct. To remove it, you will need to remove it from your registry. I also suggest that when you go to MSCONFIG, you disable every thing except SCANREG and SYSTRAY. If you have some program that you need on start up ( Eg. a keyboard program for a laptop, or an instant connection for DSL or Cable ), find out what it is you need on start up and leave ONLY those in MSCONFIG. Beyond that, the only 2 you really NEED in there are SCANREG and SYSTRAY. Good luck to all, and happy safe computing. Also, quit being so darn link click happy ! Oh yeah KAAZA is horrible horrible spyware !

Response # 8 got it on the nose. Thanks buddy!

DW.EXE is a program from http://www.medialoads.com, and is most likely bundled with Kazaa.

I did exactly what #8 said:
START, CONFIGURATION, CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then click MEDIALOAD and click UNINSTALL.

There are a couple of instances and one of them takes you to the above web site and actually asks why you are removing it :o)

Check the "BECAUSE IT SUCKS" option...

If you in fact "deleted" it, then you could have caused a bunch of issues. You are supposed to either uninstall through Add/Remove Programs control panel, or disable it from loading through MSCONFIG.

Never just delete an application....

Ok at first, that DW.exe error popped up and i hit ok. And i did all the stuff mentioned above to get rid of that stuff. But now all my icons appear as little white screen shaped things. I have no idea how to fix this problem. I tried to change to icon, but then it just changes back. I tried restarting and that doesn't work either. I have not got the DW error message since the initial one. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
