A year ago I tried the short trial of DVD Region Free for my region 1 laptop. It worked fine but I did not register. NOw, later I tried a Region 0 DVD but received the message "Windows cannot access the specified drive path. You may not have appropriate permission to access the item.Windows vannot find Program.exe,
What do I do now please?

Can your DVD still read CD's?

That message about Program.exe is just a general message that means it can't find the program it requires.

Uninstall the trial program (if you haven't already). Assuming that doesn't help uninstall the DVD software, reboot and install it again.

Dicing around with Region hacks can be a bit fraught. DVD Region software is hidden deep in the registry, encoded, and stays put. Reformat is sometimes the only way forward.

Thanks Derek

YesI still have cd. I uninstalled the Region Free software but still no go.

I looked at the files on the DVD disc and saw no audio but several video ones. Clicked on one and Win Media Player said "The system region does not match the decoder region" tho it is aregion free disc. I had no idea that Region Free would sabotage the DVD player.
You said uninstall the DCD software, but where do I find that? I have no Win disc to reinstall any items.

I probably put that badly. What software do you use for burning DVD's, is it something you installed or did it come with the machine?

Sorry, I'll get it right eventually...

What I'm after is what software do you have on there for running DVD's (not burning them)?

If that software wasn't bundled with the machine and you have a separate CD for it then it could be uninstalled / re-installed.

Thanks for persisting!
The software came installed with the secondhand machine. The trial of Region Free worked fine. So why won't a multi region DVD work?

Did the Region 0 DVD work before the trial?

Never tried a Region 0 before the trial. I was only just "discovering" Regions then and did not there was a region 0!

Can't think of anything much other than reformatting which is obviously not possible in your situation. There is a vague possibility that a registry cleaner might help but I'm none too hopeful.

Let's hope someone with some better ideas spots this post.

Someone (here?) did post the fix to this (or a very similar) problem as being to remove/uninstall the drivers, and then also physically remove the drive and reboot thereafter. Then physicically re-install the drive, reboot and re-install the drivers afresh?

Thanks someone. But all that physical stuff is just too much. If I had a Region 1 DVD I could try that, otherwise I give up.

An external usb connected dvd burner would be a viable approach? They cost relatively little these days?
