I just installed win ME on my new computer (win 2000 crashed hard and wouldn't boot). I have most of the things working except for the dvd. Whenever I try to play a dvd, it plays for a few seconds, and then locks up the entire computer. This happens on all the dvd players (powerdvd, the ati dvd player, etc)and i have tried and with different dvds. The time it locks up varies, but it is usually between 3 and 15 seconds after starting. The dvd worked fine when I had win 2000 installed (yesterday until the crash). Im running a p3 866, ati xpert 2000 32MB, Sound Blaster Live. The dvd player is a toshiba 12X

Check for DMA setting under system properties. If it is on, turn if off or vice versa. Also make sure there are no IRQ conflicts. Nothing should be sharing anIRQ with your video card. (PCI Steering is ok). Also, in your bios, check the PNP OS setting. If it is Y make it N or vice versa.

did you try to reinstall windows2000 before you installed ME?... reinstalling 2000 might be the way to go
Regards Miro

I didn't try to re-install 2000. The reason that it crashed was because I was trying to play Alien Vs. Preditor. It locked up and never booted again. I thought that ME would be more compatible.

maybe with windows98 you could have both... but again 2000 seems to be a little bit more stable.... one just cant have everything :-(

I had the exact same problem with PowerDVD. I still cant answer that one. I don't know if its an option for you but I just switched software to WinDVD 2000 and now everything works great.

I'm having the same problem with an Athlon 900, AsusA7V, ATI Xpert2000 Pro 32MB, Pioneer 16x DVD system. Locks computer up after a few seconds. Drop me a line if you fix it. I'm going to see if the ATI site says anything. Is WinDVD 2000 shareware?

I looked at the ATI site and found nothing. I emailed there support, but they are behind and it will take them some time to respond(as per the auto reply message).
I think the problem might be with the ATI Xpert 2000 boards. But Im not sure.

ATI site lists a similar issue at
http://support.ati.com/infobase/3451.html
with has some limited suggestions.

I tried the winDVD, and it still froze... but now I have a bigger problem. I will post it as a new thread.

I have the same problem as well. When I was using 98SE, I had the problem, but I could fix it by turning off the ACPI settings in BIOS. The power-saving options were using resources that my SoundBlaster Live! wanted, and the blue screen appeared after five minutes of DVD playback. I'm running WinME, and the ACPI settings are still switched off, but I get the crashing too. It used to just get really jerky, but now it halts the system altogether. Anyone with a solution please see these posts!

I have the same problem, I have a Pentium II 400 with 128 mb ram, an Ati xpert 2000 32 mb, and a Thoshiba dvd 16X, and I tried windvd 2000, powerdvd, freedvd, the programs form ati (ati dvd ), I have also tried to run a dvd on my pc without any acceleration form the ati xpert 2000, and work much more time without freeze, im my opinion the problem is in the xpert 2000 ( the program that i have used to test it was powerdvd )
sorry my bad english.
