I come home and my roommate has installed a DVD-R/CD-R Combo Drive into his computer. he says it worked for a day and no it doesn't work. I checked it out and went to the Device Manager to see what the problem is. There isn't even a listing for the Drive. It just shows his hard-drive and his floppy drive. You can put a DVD in the drive and it spins and the light comes on to show it's reading but you can't play it because the program doesn't detect a disc in the drive, and the computer doesn't even detect the drive at all. He said he's plugged-unplugged and plugged every wire there and still nothing. It's a CDRW/DVD 48x24x48x16-Liteon Drive. I haven't heard much about this company. My roommate called the HP people for the service call and paid 30 bucks for absolutely no help. I've always had good fortune with all the people here, so much help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Some newer bios have a line where you indicate exactly what hardware is plugged on the IDE port as Master or Slave wether it is hard drive or Cdrom or alike. You may have a look to check. If you don't find anything but the lines for hard drives, then the detection is the one done by Windows. The oher thing you can do is doublecheck the dotted line on the IDE cable to see if it is aligned with the figure 1 on motherboard and drive.Check the jumper to make sure it is in the right position as Master or Slave. These are preferred to Cable Select or CS.The drive detection by Windows is done by investigating the drive's own bios on the controller. The controller is part of the drive.Last before concluding the drive is bad you may install it in a friend's computer for a test and if it fails to detect again then the drive's controller is bad.Good luck.

RUN the REGEDIT program and use the Find command to search for NOIDE. If found, delete the entry, exit and reboot. See if it shows up in Device Manager.
