DVD detection problem

Having real problems with my dvd drive... in the bios setup screen the drive is listed as a CD-Rom, auto detecting changes this to DVD-Rom but on restarting and entering the setup again, the drive is listed as CD-Rom. Hence, windows treats the drive as a cd rom and so i can't play dvds. any help would be greatly appriciated...
