Hey, I have read about Windows ME knocking out DSL and making it not work and all but what I am concerned about is that my DSL was working fine till a few weeks ago and it will get cut of or something. I am really lost on this and wondered if someone could help. If you do, I will be very thankful

Same problem I think.
Hi, Guys and/or Ladies! Anyone care to try this on?
System: Older Compaq Presario MV 700 w. GenuineIntel Intel (R) family 6 Model 5 processor; 128 MBs RAM, Windows ME, upgraded to include a Yamaha CDRW 2100E. This computer hosts a small home network comprised of a Dell Dimension 4100, also sporting Windows ME.
Background (Possibly relevant):
· Had DSL installed some months past. Always seemed slower than our former 56K modem.
· The system’s Device Manager shows a yellow-highlighted exclamation point for the PCI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller, said to be uninstalled or without current drivers.
History. Three weeks ago, our Compaq would boot up only slowly, beginning w. a black screen and a slowly spinning hourglass icon. After 45 seconds to 5 minutes, the system would then complete the bootup process. Within a day, however, the black screen/hourglass delay became longer and longer, until finally the system could not get past it.
Conveyed system to local ‘puter dealer. After extensive testing, the tech said he’d finally managed to track the problem to the Intel 21143 based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter card software; when uninstalled, the system appeared to be working fine. When he reinstalled the software, the computer appeared to function normally, although we were advised to reenable the Ethernet Adapter card’s hardware profile on returning home, which we did. (The tech seemed puzzled, implied he was unsure of the fix, invited us to return for a free repair if we continued to experience problems.)
Computer worked fine for several days until we determined to resolve the DSL problem. Suspecting a poor installation, when working with our local ISP tech we discovered that the TCP/IP capability of the system’s Ethernet adapter card had disappeared from the Device Manager. Running in Safe Mode, we found the appropriate file in Norton’s Protected Files and reinstalled it. (In the process, when attempting to access Help from the Safe Mode desktop, we received the message “The initiation of the Help Center failed. Please report the following error number to Microsoft Support: 2147143677.”)
After installation of the Ethernet adapter card’s TCP/IP software, we had come full circle. Attempting to reboot, we were returned to the “black screen, rotating hourglass forever“ mode.
Any tips or ideas would be enormously appreciated!
Best regards from Ross, Scott, Antun, Walt & Lynn.
