Comment:

When I look in the System properties\performance, I get these two messages:
compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance. Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
I tried to uninstall the hard drive and reinstall it but the problem is still there.
My system: Win ME, Maxtor 30GB
And what is the meaning of: No PC Card sockets are installed... is it related to the problem?

What type of system, motherboard? You probably need to install the latest drivers for your motherboard. Take a look in device manager, are there any conflicts or items highlighted in yellow? Something is not right and your system should not be in compatibility mode.

I once had it with a cd-rom in win98, so I assume it's the same: Install the IDE-drivers that are on the cd that came with your mainboard. In some cases they aren't installed during the installation of Win$low$.
If you open the device manager, do you see a yellow mark at the ide-controller? This will porbably be the problem.

Yes, I looked in the device manager and everithing is allright. I also unistalled and reinstalled the hard drive controlers and the SCSI controller and that doesn't fix the problem. I just read the microsoft help... I'll try to find something in that.
If you have any other suggestion, my motherboard: ASUS A7V 133 266Mhx FSB UltraDMA100
Thanks !!!

One of the first items in that Microsoft KB article is to scan for virus'....

If you have a Master Boot Record virus, you will have the exact symptoms that you describe.

Have you scanned?

Are you running WinME on a 266MHz?
Did you have this problem from the moment you installed ME?
When I said to check for the IDE-drivers, I didn't mean the harddisk controllers! I really mean the IDE-controllers! (at my computer, it is one of the last lines in the device manager.) These controllers are needed if you have more than 1 IDE-cable in your computer.(floppy not counted)

If you do have a bootsector virus, and the virusscanner can't clean it, use the fdisk/mbr command. If you can't boot anymore due to this command, use ranish partition manager to install a standard bootrecord (can also be used to save or delete the bootrecord)
