OS: windows Me
CPU/Ram: 1.0 Ghz 128MB
Comment:

My PC won't boot. I have downloaded and created a windows Me floppy boot disk from www.bootdisk.com, when I boot from this disk the program reports that the partition info cannot be found. (The hard drive is detected in the bios). Is there a way to try and recover the partition info as I have info on the hard disk that I need?

fdisk /status

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

when I execute fdisk /status I get:-
Disk 1, Drv (nothing), Mbytes 38162, Free 8, usage 100%.

when I execute fdisk then display partition info I get:-
Partition 1, status active, type NTFS, volume label (none), Mbytes 38154, usage 100%.

This is odd because this drive had Windows Millenium installed!

Hi Dave,

Yes, that is very odd.

I think your best shot at recovering data is to put that HD in a working NT/XP box.

Good luck

IF the partition type has been changed only in the MBR then I do not think any OS is going to read it, but third party progams will work. If the type was also changed in the VBR , a recovery program will be needed and may not work.

Haveing said that no OS is going to change the partition type by itself, so what program did you run right befor problem ? Knowing just how the partition type was changed will help in determining best method to correct it.

Is 3.8g the correct size for hdd ?

Two free DOS programs to fix the MBR:

1) testdisk
This one kinda steep learning curve, but powerfull program.
2) MBRWORK
This much more easy to use but still requires carefull reading.

Favorite non-free program: Partition Table Doctor (~$40).

Best
