Really would appreciate any advice on how to downgrade my system to Windows 98. My PC now freezes when it loads up Win ME and gets to the desktop - think its got clogged up with too many viruses. I'd really like to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 98(i no longer have the Win ME disk). Thing is i don't have a bootdisk for Windows ME and have no means of making one - only access i have to a PC is in public libraries or internet cafes. Is there anyway i can get to DOS prompt from the start-up before Win ME tries to load itself without a bootdisk? I've tried to boot with the Windows 98 CDROM but that doesn't work even when i set my CDROM as the primary boot drive. I'd really appreciate any advice, i'm tearing my hair out at the moment!

Actually, 98 will be an upgrade.

You'll need a boot disk from:

www.bootdisk.com

Hi

See if you can load windows in safe mode
by tapping f8 after the initial splash screen . You should get a list of options chose safe mode and if you can boot up in safe mode you'll be able to make a boot disk.

I will argue your comment, ME is one of the best os ever to come out of MS.

Large majority dont know how to build the darn thing, it runs better on modern day equpment that it does on the older rigs.

Its draw back being lack of knowledge by the usrs and 512 ram limitation which can be over come.

Hi Janos,

"Large majority dont know how to build the darn thing"

I think you're right. Most don't know how; or want to.

They figure they paid their $100 and shouldn't have to build it. That's what Microsoft is getting paid for.

Its not that hard !!!

1. Always load ME on a clean drive.
1.a Don't make the partition much larger than 10 gig or so.
2. Choose the custom install feature, and load the complete os, and defrag.
3. Give the thing at least 256 meg or ram.
4. Install the chipset inf drivers.
5. Load all updates and latest version of dx9 for me.
6. Change the system from desktop Computer to Network Server reboot and watch the difference.
7. Defrag
8. load all other drivers etc.
9. Load your programs
10. Enjoy a stable and fast system.

But yeah the manual that should have come with the os one had to buy separately.

Did you say 100 us i presume !!

I WISH cost me close to 300 AU when the final cut came out.

Hi thanks for your feedback.

I've tried to get to safe mode from the start up but when i press F8 it only gives me options to choose which drive to look for a boot disk with - floppy, cd-rom, ide or network.

The only other options that flash up on the screen at the start up are:

DEL for BIOS setup

F12 for Network boot

Any other suggestions about how i could get to DOS prompt from the start-up without a bootdisk?

I can't get one from the net because i'm only using library pcs and the bootdisk.com site only lets you download a program to make one, which the library pcs won't let me install on their systems.

Many thanks

Paul

I found Windows Me to be a very god O/S ,once one has taken a little time to configure the O/S to perform a optimal performance ! I have the applications that load at startup down to only the ones that ar needed Windows system apps.My PC boots up at 94% user resources free, and even while surfingthe net with my ATI TV Wonder running its stil in the high 60's on the user resources. Windows Me is a much better O/S then Win98 ,it has better multi-media abilities , the system restore utility, which has saved my rear a couple of times. I did adjust the amount of hard drive space the system restore utility can use from the default amount of up to 12% of your H.D. to 1500 M.B.'s on my 30 G.B. hard drive .At twelve percent it could have used somewhere in the area of 3-4 Gigs of Mem. I added a extra 128M.B. of SDRAM, sound card a graphics card ,a CD-RW ,a extra fan for additional cooling. I clean the dust out from the internal parts of my system about every 3 months ! To et Windows Me up and running well either do a google search for Trev's How to Make Windows Me Run Well ver5How to run Windows ME well, version 5 <http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtweak.html> Now its true that many should be able to just plug in their ew PC and use it without havig to worry about configuring the O/S, however Iam thankful for the little bugs in Windows Me ,because it made me find a new hobbie that I love !
Take Care Nick

Windows 98 / ME Users

To get into Windows 98 / ME safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 key" on the top of your keyboard or press and hold the left or right Ctrl key as the computer is booting. If done properly you should get into the "Windows 98 / ME Startup Menu" similar to the below screen example. In this menu choose option 3 by pressing the 3 key and press enter.

Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.

Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu
=============================
1. Normal
2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe mode
4. Step-by-step confirmation
5. Command prompt only
6. Safe mode command prompt only

Enter a choice: 1

F5=Safe Mode Shift+F5=Command prompt Shift+F8= Step-by-step confirmation [N]

got the above from a google search

try F5, tapping F8 or the left control key

Hi Paul,

Don't waste your time trying to boot ME into DOS.

If you ask the library / cafe politely and explain that you are not "installing" anything but simply creating a floppy, you will probably get cooperation and get your 98se boot floppy made.
