I have read about the boot disk method of exposing the DOS prompt in Windows ME. I am totally confused as to how this works. Can one or many of you fine folks out there please tell me, step by step, how to do this? Please treat me like a total idiot, I won't take it personally! I have run DOS commands for the purposes of deleting built up index.dat files and others in Windows 98. Still, pretend that you are talking with a house plant when you describe the method. What is a boot disk? Thanks, you folks are the best. Keep your stick on the ice. LEE

Go to- Start/Settings/Control Panel/
Add-Remove/Start Up Disk
you will need a blank formatted floppy. After creating the boot disk, restart your PC with the bootdisk in the floppy drive. you will be presented with 4 options, choose one of them wich applies to what you want to do.
For a bootdisk with more options, download the Windows ME bootdisk image and run it to make the ultimate boot disk below.

hello
you can allso use your windows 98 exmergency boot disk to do this and most dos comands from 98 will work.
have a nice day

Why do you need a DOS mode? I've found that ME's virtual DOS is a champ for running things like old DOS games. 95/98's doesn't hold a candle to it! I always had to shut down to DOS mode for good performance w/ those; but not required in ME! Somewhere there's a patch for ME that will let you boot into a DOS prompt from the boot menu you get by holding down on startup, but I forget where it is.

you can do these in dos
A:\>scanreg
A:\>scanreg /restore
A:\>scanreg /fix
A:\>scandisk c: [followed by surface scan]
A:\>scandisk d: [followed by surface scan]

You can also do a system restore from DOS
