i need to edit system.ini from dos i guess, but i don't know how. what commands should i type to do this? I am stuck in dos at a:\ because i don't know how to use dos. my harddrive should be c: right?

how do i change directories or just simply edit c:windows\system.ini

Natively ME doesn't allow you to access DOS, so I'm guessing your using a boot floppy?
Anyway if you wish to edit the system.ini file type:

C:
press enter(return) key

cd C:\Windows
press enter

then I beleive typing
edit system.ini - press enter should work.

If not then edit.com is not where it should be (but it should work).

Then you should see a screen in blue with white text on it (the standard colours, simply use the page up/down and left, right, up, down keypad buttons to get to where you need to go and the rest is the same as modern day typing (because they do trhe same function as this basically just with pretty colours and a more friendly interface.)
Then once done press Alt then choose File, and then Save, if you want to do it quickly press:
Alt then F then X and choose yes to overwrite file. Remove floppy disk, cd boot disc and system should boot.

If your system.ini has actually been deleted then I think it's going to be a bit more trickey, I believe it's made during the install, or is copied over during install and then configured by the system with your options etc, I can't remeber right now.

Sorry for the double post, but if you are using a floppy that says boot with cd rom support or boot without choose boot with and then see what drive letter is assigned to it.

This is usually 1 higher than the hard drive partiotns, so if you had one partiotn and one cd/dvd drive that would be E: (ramDisk made by windows boot floppy to store utils for use by user) D: would be the cd/dvd and C: would be the hard drive. Replace C: with whatever drive letter your copy of WindowsME has been installed too.

... try and focus

As mentioned (and hard to escape), it will be difficult to edit a missing file - the method presented above is reasonably accurate, although not completely

C:

cd\windows

edit system.ini

... 'close' doesn't count in DOS though

Hopefully you are using a WinME bootdisk, as that should set the program paths.

"so i edited my system.ini file...."

Well, that shouldn't have deleted it, so maybe you saved it under a different extension (like 'system.txt' or similar)

Try this:

dir c:\windows\system.*

That should show you all of the files named 'system' in the Windows folder - post back what is found and it may be as simple as renaming the file

Alternatively, you may be able to rollback the registry, which will also restore previous versions of system.ini & win.ini

Using a WinME bootdisk, enter:

scanreg /restore

... and select a backup prior to your editing 'experiment'
