While using Kazaa I got the Blue Screen of Death and now my IE is all screwed. I get an "res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL\dnserror.htm" HELP!!!! I still have email access, and IM and WeatherBug, but my browser is still seeing the dns error. If you type the error message into Google you get the feeling (From MicroSoft) that I have to go into the registry and change some stuff. Pretty damn scary, man. I don't want to do that, seriously. Can someone help me?

If microsoft says go to register then you are in deep. I suggest you download "Paltalk" (A free voice communication program) Once set up in there go to the "Computer High Tech room" and they will give you the best help you can get for this sort of problem.

This is a pretty common occurrence. Especially if you use AOL or have newdotnet or SaveNow installed.
First... Connect to the net and see if you can ping out. To do this:
Can you ping both by IP and by FQDN?
Try this:
Connect to your ISP.Go to start>>run>>command
Click ok.At the prompt type:
ping 209.90.0.4
Post back with the packets sent and the packets received line.
Then type:
ping sky.net
Post back with the packets sent and the packets received line again.
If you get an "Unknown Host" error upon trying to ping sky.net... Try this:
First go to add/remove programs in the control panel.
Look through the list.
Uninstall newdotnet or new.net if you see it.
If you happen to see SaveNow in the list, uninstall that also. Now to fix the problem you will have to rebuild some registry keys. To do this you will have to uninstall dial up networking, remove some registry keys, and reinstall dial up networking.
To do this part:
Go to add/remove programs in the control panel.
Go to the Windows Setup Tab.
Uncheck Communications.
Click apply.
Click ok.
It will ask you to reboot your computer.DO NOT REBOOT. Say no.
Leave the control panel up.
Go to start>>run>>regedit.
Highlight My Computer on the left.
At the top of the registry editor, click on Registry>>export registry file.
Save it to your desktop.
Call it Backup.reg
Make sure the Export Range at the bottom is set to All.Once the registry is backed up, browse to each of the following folders or "keys" in the registry and delete them:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\AFVXD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\DHCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess
\Authentication\SMM_FilesClose the registry editor.
Go back to control panel.
Double click add/remove programs.
Go to the Windows setup tab.
Hightlight the word Communications (not the checkmark box) and click details in the bottom right.Put a check in Dial up Netowrking.
Click Ok.
Click apply.
Click ok.It will ask you to reboot.
This time: REBOOT.
When you get back up, try connecting to the net and browsing.
Generally, this fixes your problem... as long as you do not have anything installed that is actively corrupting the Winsock keys in the registry you should be ok.
Let me know.

I fix the problem with your notes. I have problem with newnetdot. First I deleted all entries on the resgistry about newnetdot and new.net. Then use your notes and fix-it

newgrl,
Thanks for your tips.
I have the same problem! (Win 98, IE 5)
I followed all the steps you suggested by removing the registry keys. After rebooting, my browser seems to be behaving ok, but every second link I try to go to brings up the same problematic
"...SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm", "..page can't be displayed" message.
I have to "refresh" the browser at least 3 times for the URL to work. Some websites I just can't get to at all.Any other suggestions? Should I reinstall Internet Explorer? Is there something else I need to do? Please help. Feel free to e-mail me.

I forgot to mention - I recently installed a newer version of Nortons Anti Virus which I suspect is what is causing this...

I tried your step above as I am having the same problem on win98 IE6
I can still surf using netscape & my e-mail works fine but IE keeps coming up with shdoclc.dll/dnserror
do you know anything else I can try

I have Win98 SE and IE6.0 and tried all the steps mentioned above and no way to surf the web with IE6.0.
If you have installed IE6.0 over another version of IE, in my case IE5.5, try the following:
1. Go to Control Panel and remove IE6.0 by restoring the old configuration.
2. This will restore your earlier IE5.5 configuration.
3. Start IE5.5 and you will see that now all is working, that is, you can surf again.
4. Execute IE6SETUP.EXE, if you have it or dowload it, and you will reinstall IE6.0. And surprise, surprise now you won't get the offending message of Page can not be loaded. The steps above worked for me and hope for other people. Good luck!

Recently had to reinstall all the Norton anti-virus protection on my computer after it was infected by Klez e-mail worm virus. Since doing that, I have had the same problem with the message "res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL\dnserror.htm" appearing in IE 6 when I try to view any pages.
In order to gain access to the internet have had to install Netscape Navigator browser which is OK, but I'd like to have IE back up and working.
Have followed all the advice above, but to no avail. Any other ideas on how to solve this ??
Many thanks

Two things I did to solve my problem...
It appears that if you have McAfee installed on your computer prior to installing Nortons, when you uninstall McaAfee, it takes a crucial file with it.
You now have to extract that sepcific file from your Windows 98 CD ... there's a post on the Symantec site how to do this (sorry I lost the link or I would post it here)
Another thing I did was reinstall Internet Explorer 5. Now everything works!

Thank you newgrl
Your dnserror solution is clear and it works! I fiddled with DNS related settings forever with no success. I had none of the programs you mentioned, so the problem must be broader than than just those. (I found you through Google.)
Thank you so much.

I think when I downloaded AdDelete it changed the proxy settings on IE5 and started causing the dns error problems. I've uninstalled the program and deleted the proxy settings, but I still get the same error messages on IE5. I tried newgrl's fix but it didn't work. Anyone else have problems with the AdDelete program?
