Help!!! Whenever I turn on my computer, I get a message - Rundll has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL. Rundll will now close; ALSO - Mones Express requires 256 colors to display properly. PLease adjust.... Do you want to exit Money Express.; I do so. I then go in and the Display setting will be on 16. I change it to High Color and restart my computer, as it tells me to. When it restarts, the same problem goes all over again. I have also noticed my sound is not working either. I scanned for a virus and McAfee showed I did not have one. I am up to date on my McAfee Virus Updates. I have Windows ME. ANY SUGGESTIONS? IT'S A MESS.

All of these symptoms point to a problem in the system.ini file.

Go to start>>run>>msconfig

Are you in selective or normal startup?
If you are in selective startup, is "Process System.ini" checked?
If not, check it. Reboot. Try to change your colors and see if you are still getting the error messages.

If you are in normal startup, you most likely have a corrupted system.ini file.

To fix this will take some work and I do not know how proficient you are at computers, but there are instructions here from newgrl:

Give them a shot.

I went to that post and was going to go through that process but when it said to go to search to find "system.tsh", my search program could not find that file. I am still stuck.

Try this to get a new system.ini:

1. Go to start>>run>>msconfig
2. Put a dot in Selective Startup.
3. Uncheck Process system.ini
4. Click apply>>ok.
5. You will be asked to reboot. Say NO.
6. Go to start>>run>>system.ini
7. Highlight everthing under all of the lines that start with REM. Start with the line that says [boot] and go to the very bottom
8. At the top of Notepad, click on Edit>>copy.
9. Open up a new instance of notepad from start>>programs>>accessories.
10. At the top of the clean notepad, click on Edit>>Paste.
11. In the new notepad, click on File>>Save.
12. Call the file system.txt and save it to your desktop.
13. Go to start>>run>>msconfig.
14. Put a dot in Normal Startup.
15. Click apply>>ok.
16. Place a bootdisk (startup disk) in the floppy drive.
17. Say YES to the reboot.
18. If your BIOS is set to see the floppy drive first you will be presented with a boot menu. Choose Without CD ROM support.
19. After your computer boots to the disk, you will be at an a:\> prompt. From the a:\ prompt type the following commmands to rename your system.ini (for safekeeping) and copy the new clean one to the correct place:

c:
cd windows
ren system.ini system.xxx
cd desktop
ren system.txt system.ini
copy system.ini c:\windows

20. Pull out the bootdisk and hit ctrl+alt+del to reboot your computer.

When you get up, you should have sound, but your video will be bad. To get your video working again, go to device manager (Right click My Computer>>Properties>>Device Manager) and remove your Display adapter. Reboot.

Windows should reinstall the driver and prompt for reboot once again. Reboot.

See if that doesn't solve your issues.
