Arrrrrrgggggg....
Windows ME
Compaq Presario 4880
128 Mb Ram
ATI Rage Pro AGP (on board)I can't install a video driver. No display adapters are listed in device manager - when I try to install one, I am told it conflicts. There are insufficient I/O slots. Some I/O slots are being taken up by an unknown device...and when I check the Display properties, I get what I put in the subject line of this message.
This is driving me crazy. I've tried installing ATI drivers, generic drivers, Standard PCI drivers...nothing works. maybe there is an old video driver in there somewhere, not being displayed in the Device manager?

the way to find ghost drivers is to boot into safe mode. it is the only place they are displayed.
to boot into safe mode:
go to start>>shutdown>>restart
after the POST gives you the beep, hold down the left control key.
you should get a menu before the you see the ME splash screen.if that doesn't work:
do the above, but after the POST, start pressing the F8 key... about once every second.
that should give you the menu.if that doesn't work:
put a non-bootable floppy in the drive.
when the error message comes up about it being a non system disk, take the floppy out and press F8 twice.
that will definately give you the menu.once in safe mode, take a look at the device manager.
remove any unknown devices(unless you have IR ports or something that is supposed to be there).
remove anything listed under display adapters.
remove and duplicates(except some things listed under system are supposed to be duplicated).
remove any monitor(s) that are listed.reboot.
ME should pick up some new things and install drivers for them....lets see where we are from there...

also sounds like you need a monitor driver, try downloading and installing that ,most monitor manufacturers have specific drivers for their monitors.
can search at click here to search by first letter of manufacturer name

click here for info on unknown monitor -unknown device

DESCRIPTION: Unpacks the INF file containing Plug-and-Play information for
configuring a Presario FX Monitor. When this file is missing, the system
displays messages such as "Unknown Device" or "Unknown Monitor."

I tried that, but it didn't help. The monitor says that it is working in the Device Manager, but under Display properties it still says (Unknown Monitor) on (Unknown Device). The only Unknown devices in the Device manager, whether in safe mode or not, can be seen under devices by connection -> computer -> properties -> Input/Output. Something (presumably the (Unknown Device) from the display properties) is using up my I/O slots. I can't get it to use a driver I install!

1st in device manager remove the monitor-then goin display properties -settings - advanced- monitor- is your monitor listed there -exact model number etc. ,if not you need to install the monitor driver. from within display properties choose change monitor -specify the location of the driver (advanced)-click next-choose-display a list of drivers in a specific location,so you can select the driver you want-click next-click have disk-and then browse to the location on your c:\ drive where the driver is located ,click ok -then ok again ,reboot when prompted . this should solve the problem.=====================================================copied from compaqs site=====
