During a particularly slow Internet Explorer session (slower than dialup - I have a cable modem), I reset the computer using ctrl-alt-del. When it rebooted, the mouse was gone, the display resolution had changed to 640x480 and 16 colors, and the screen would not refresh after the screen saver ran through (screen stays black even after pressing spacebar or moving mouse or clicking mouse). I tried to reset the display settings using Control Panel, but they remained the same, even after rebooting.
I ran MSCONFIG. Under the System.Ini tab, the first five lines or so were garbled symbols and obviously somehow corrupted. I used selective startup and disabled the system.ini file, so the mouse now appears and works properly, but the animated mouse options I had used do not work.
I then opened the c:\windows\system.ini file through My Computer. It read:
"; This file was created by the System Configuration Utility as
; a placeholder for your SYSTEM.INI file. Your actual
; SYSTEM.INI file has been saved under the name SYSTEM.TSH." The remainder of the SYSTEM.INI file appears ok.The file SYSTEM.TSH has an iron icon with it. .TSH files are listed as "Broderbund Iron On Type," associated with Print Shop. Print Shop has been on my system for a few years, and I have added no new programs recently. (Trying to open the SYSTEM.TSH file yields a popup dialog box saying that the file cannot be found, and opens a new window to run Print Shop, but says that it can't run with 640x480 resolution.)
I have run several scans: Norton AntiVirus (no viruses found), Spyware Doctor (removed numerous spyware files) and AdAware (removed a few cookies). After rebooting, the problems remain.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try entering into the 'run' box:
scanreg /restore
to reset the registry as well as system.ini - or you could extract a copy from the backup CAB file using WinZip (etc)
The *.TSH (troubleshooting) extensions are just a result of having disabled the file with msconfig - the 'Broderbund Printshop' association is just a leftover from a previous application and doesn't really mean anything.
Re-enabling system.ini from msconfig should remove the TSH extension
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I ran scanreg /restore, but unfortunately, the restore point has the same problem, since I tried a number of things before seeking help. (Yes, the troubleshoot suffix .TSH has disappeared.)
I have noted, however, the system.ini file under the [boot] heading has a line that reads:
*display fallback=0
I tried removing the asterisk, but upon rebooting, another line with the asterisk shows up as well.
I'm guessing that this line is the problem. Should the value = something other than zero?
Thanks for any help.

Whats the easiest way to adjust the brightness of your desktop monitor a CRT . I installed an updated graphics card driver for my ATI RADEON 32M.B. PCI card .Now in most of my games DIABLO, Quake 3 ARENA, and Midtown Maddness the brightness is noticably darker. I'e tried adjusting the settings from within the games ,however nothing seems to work .I remember once getting a brightnesss and contrast slider on my desktop however I cant find it again ,can someone point me it that direction ,I understand this may not fix the problem ,however its driving me nuts that I cant find this desktop setting ?
Thanks in Advance Nick
