Hi,
I have an IBM 1200 Thinkpad. I can't move the display settings---it stays on 16 colors and 640 by 480 pixels. I have spent hours troubleshooting and have read several postings but none seem to help. I have typed dxdiag.exe and I get the message Microsoft DirectDraw You must be running 256 color mode or higher. I try to change it but it won't stay. I have gotten the error message: Error problem getting extra display info. result code = 0x887600de (No directdraw support. I click on Display in the directx diagnostic tool and click on test direct draw and I get two notes
-No problem found.
-Directdraw test results. Failure at step 3 (DirectDrawCreate). HRESULT = 0x887600de (No directdraw support)
Can anyone suggest anything I can do to correct this problem. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!

Where do I go to get the correct driver for my video card? IBM? Windows? How do I know what video card I have and need to get? Sorry, but I am learning with the problems. Thank you for the help.

You may have the installation CD for your video card if one came with your PC. Check any discs you have. If not, proceed as below:

First, identify your video card as follows:
Either go to www.belarc.com and download the belarc advisor and when you run it it will tell you what all of your hardware is, or
hwinfo /ui which is built into Windows does a similar job and is accessed by going to start, run, type hwinfo /ui and press enter (note the space after hwinfo).

When you have identified your video card, you can go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest driver for it. Make sure it is the appropriate driver for Windows ME. To find the manufacturer just use www.google.com to search for the name and model of the card.

Right click on My Computer, go to properties, device manager, expand the + beside display adapters (which means graphics cards), click on the driver listed, go to properties (bottom left), find the driver tab, click update driver, select specify the location of the driver, click on display a list of drivers in a specific location, click next, click have disk, and point Windows to the new drivers for your card and let it update. Reboot and see how it is.

I installed video card drivers...now the options are only 16colors in the display...the other 2 options are gone! (256) and (16high colors)...oh no! I am thinking of just restoring the computer to the factory settings....I know I'll lose everything....but I am frustrated and have been troubleshooting this for days. Any other advice before I restore would be helpful. Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi!
I have tried a system restore and it won't go back---it is stuck in August.
I also have tried to use the Recovery CD that came with my computer and it WON'T work! *The disk was in a sealed envelope--so I doubt if it had scratches. Any help would be appreciated as I believe my warranty just ran out -- !! Of course!
Thanks again!

What is the make and model of the notebook? Also, when you go into device manager, what does it have listed as the display driver?

Hi,
I have a IBM 1200 thinkpad. The display driver is Silicon Motion LynxEM+.

I haven't been able to do system restore because it won't let me go back to any other months besides August. So, I wanted to do the CD Recovery Disk and that won't work. I don't know how to get into the Bios to see if it stopping it from booting up from the CD. My computer picture stinks right now. Any more suggestions will be appreciated and tried!. Thanks everyone for trying to help me.
