When I try to defrag I recieve the message: Defrag ID NO: DEFRAG004. I have tried to run scan disk several times changing the settings etc but it keeps restarting once it reaches a certain point (I have quit all programs an dleft it running all night although I havent tried it in safe mode because Ive forgot what key I need to press in the BIOS!) Will formatting the hard drive resolve this error and will it stop me from upgrading to XP? Thanx. Jordan Russell

Jordan, what is all of the message that it shows? What is your computer setup.
Some info on scandisk. Might help.
Good Luck

Press the ctrl key when booting or f8 when you see the starting windows millennium and choose safemode then run scandisk. If you want to run it in dos using a bootdisk, at the dos prompt type
scandisk/all/autofix/nosave/surface
then hit enter

I also have the Defrag004 problem. I have run Scandisk 4 times. It showed no problems.
But I still can't defrag because of 004
message. Windows 98 2E

Im having the same problem as well. People keep telling me to run scan disk, and I do, and it keeps telling me that I have no errors. I also cant uninstall defrag either from the add/remove programs window.

Dear reader,
My computer is going very slow, so I though I would do a scan disk and then went to Defrag and the Error message DEFRAG004 comes up. After not being able to defrag my computer I shut it down and now every time I start it up the safe scan starts and this is followed by a surface scan that takes sometime. How can I fix these problems so that I can defrag my computer and fix the error Defrag004? can you help me?
