Disk Defragmenting and Scandisk

I have a 400 Mhz HP computer with a 6GIG hard drive and 64 MB RAM. I have recently upgraded from Windows 98 SE to ME and the disk defragmenter and scandisk run all the time but never finish. If I interrupt the tasks they start up again after the computer is idle for awhile. Also, in the log file I get a message saying the task has stopped because the computer is non-idle when the computer was really idle with only explorer and systray running in the background. Do you have a solution???

Maybe they're scheduled to run in "Scheduled Tasks" and keep running because they never finish. Check Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Scheduled tasks (and the StartUp folder as well). I don't know why they should be there, but if they are, get rid of them. Run them when YOU want, not on some schedule.
