Hi, earlier this evening I tried to upgrade to directx 9 from 8. It went thru the whole download and install process, then rebooted my computer to finish up. Well.. now the computer will not reboot at all.

It will not boot up in safe mode either.

When I go step by step confirmation I get past the first few, then it says updating system files, please wait this may take a few minutes. Then I get: Windows cannot update from 1% 2%, and it keeps going like that in circles for as long as I let it run.

Am I totally messed up or is there a way to get around that? I can't think of anything to do short of re-installing the whole thing. The problem with that is my husband is over seas on business and he has the cd-keys.

If anyone could help, I would appreciate it much. Thanks

So far that interesting Google search is helping me. Cross your fingers. I did not have a back up disk, so I couldn't go that route, but you can bet your bippy I'm going to make one right now...

Yup,I wanted to suggest a system restore, but, within FIRST link I gave, the same link you offfered Hopalong is also offered as a possible solution...and more.

I just wish people would take the time to read what is posted,BEFORE a follow-up post becomes redundant.

Don't mean to come across as condescending, but it happens all the time...hell,I'm guilty of the same offense more often than I'd like to be.

I'm tired and fading...I'll shutup now. ;-)

Well, it still won't load DX9 properly, I keep getting the same result. I have no idea what it's problem is. At least I can get the system running again.

Darn DX9

Is there some particular reason for wanting/needing DX9? Gaming?

Have you tried running dxdiag via Start/Run?

I'll try to hang with you as long as I can,but I know for a fact that some of our partners in crime here know much more about DirectX issues than would I.

Yes, I need it to run EverQuest on that computer. Now I'm wondering if my darn video card even supports it. GEForce 2 Max 100/200 I'm searching all over the nvidia site at the moment. I downloaded their "update" and all it did was totally mess up my video.

Maybe I should just give up and go to bed. I'm not that computer inclined... lol

Hi brian!

I will check those things out right away and let you know. I took a brief nap finally after 12 hours of struggling with it.

Lil.

Make sure your firewall is UN INSTALLED not turned off. Your anti virus should be turned off. Both these application dive deep into your system.

If your anti virus is left active it will prevent certain files from loading properly as with you firewall.

Now go to this site and from there down load DirectX. The down load file (and make sure that_it_is) the "Redist" version.

It comes as a zipped file, as opposed to the download auto-install type put out by Microsoft.

When you have downloaded the zipped file and you have turned off all the above (it would not hurt also in this case to Ctrl+Alt+Del all other files leaving only Explorer and Sys Tray.

When you unzip, the install will be quick and clean unlike the painful drag out of Microsoft download. You will also retain a zipped version of DirectX for future if ever required.

Good luck
