Directx 8.1 install problems...

Hello. I've tried installing the latest Directx version 8.1, but it won't install properly. After I click install on the directx file downloaded from it does its thing and says it needs to restart my computer to finish installation. When it restarts however, it says it cannot update one or more files after the initial windows me logo. What can I do to get this thing to work?

Start >> RUN >> type dxdiag | and double check what version you have installed already. post back.

It gives me the message: "Warning: It appears that the installed version of DirectX (4.08.01.0881) is newer than this version of DxDiag (4.07.01.3000). Some information reported may be inaccurate. You should use a newer version of DxDiag.

Humour me - try again, and download it from here -
As far as I can get into the install is where it say's Serching for updated compents, but it dosn't do anything. It freezes and when I hit Cntrol+Alt+Del, it says not responding.

I have the same problem....it gets halfway through the install and then just freezes. ive tryed closeing all my apps running in the back ground apart for Explorer but it still freezes halfway through. The version already on my comp is 8.0 and have not ever had this problem before. Is their anything i can do to prevent this from happening?? plez HELP!!!

I installed it from warcraft3 the game, and it says upon starting the game "unable to initialize directX....." then tried to install it from the windowsupdate site and still no luck. anyone know why?

i have a similar problem i tried installing direct x 8.1 from a game cd and from microsofts site. I am running win me. It starts to install, then it updates my system, the bar goes all the way to the end, and then it comes up and says "Directx setup could not find a required inf file." any ideas???
