Is it true that DiectX 8.1 and Windows Me dont work well together. In order to update my ATI Multi-Media Center I have to upgrade to DirectX 8.1 ? I currently have 8.0 installed. I have read alot of post saying Windows Me & DirectX 8.1 are not compatable ? How many have installed it with no problems and visa-versa ? Thanks Nick

That is false I have recently updated to 8.1 and have had more luck with it than 8.0.

The problem is with directX and windows me. Hardware configurations cause the problem. Me personally? I cant upgrade past the default version of directX [installed with ME] without causing an error.
Your wise to be cautious because this upgrade is one of those not so easy to recover from disasters. Unless of course it works fine for you as it did for many others :). Its all a crap shoot.

There was a glitch with the original version of 8.1 that I have heard reports from, but they have since updated that version to 8.1a and I think there is a "b" out as well. It works just dandy now, as cited above.

I've tried to upgrade wot i thought was Directx 8.1 to 8.1a from microsoft (22 aug 02) but every time I try to load MS flightsim 2002 or MS Messenger, I get the message:
MS DirectPlay this pre-release version of DirectX has expired, please upgrade to the latest version from http://www.microsoft.com/directx
Alas! what am I to do? i'v tried to install the 'upgrade' many many times (it goes through the whole process) it tells me that it has upgraded, and continues with all the error messages (I still cant play or re-install MS Flightsim)
ps. DXDiags shows i have version 8.1 with some beta version files & no problems
