digital camera install error

I've installed the software that came with my Sony DSC-P9 digital camera, which includes a USB driver. After I connect my camera to the PC via the USB port, I get the error message, "cmddninst has caused an error in CDMNEW.DLL. Cmdninst will now close." The camera icon does not appear as it should on the list of devices under "My Computer", although "Sony DSC" does appear under the USB Controllers listed in the Device Mgr. I've contacted Sony, HP and Microsoft, who have been unable to provide me with a solution to this problem. Can anyone please help me?

Try uninstalling the software, rebooting, and then reinstalling the software in Safe Mode. Reboot again and then connect the camera. You won't see it in My Computer, as it won't be assigned a drive letter.
