I have bought a friend's digital camera. I installed the software and it is a USB hook-up but the computer is not recognizing the camera. I would like to upload the pics from the camera to the computer. I think that I need a driver but I am not sure. Can anyone help?
It is a Samsung digimax 240.
I bought new rechargeable batteries and charged them so they are at 100%. Someone said that when the digital camera's juice is low that you wont be able to upload the pictures. So it is at 100% and something is still not right.

Not knowledgeable of how the Digimax 240 software is setup. But I just spent a day trying to get the Kodak "EasyShare" software to work for one of their new cameras. It is NOT "Easy to Share" pictures on any system. With it, you need software from Kodak, most likely the same basic package used with other cameras. One problem, is that you need to install the drivers first, before plugging the camera into a USB port on the system for the first time.
Try un-installing the software first.
Then go to System Properties - Device Manager and under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" look for an entry for the camera. If any camera entries are found there or anywhere in the Device Manager, select them and "Remove" the item.
Then reboot into Safe Mode and check Device Manager for any Camera entries again, and delete them.
Next boot the system into normal mode. And then install all the editing and management software, not just the transfer program.
After installing and rebooting yet again, (so Windows ME can finish installing the software), wait, then plug in the USB cable to the system and then the camera. Then turn the camera on. Wait and watch screen. You should see the USB Plug and Play software detect the camera and install drivers for it from the Windows ME system CAB files. After this is done (and it may require a boot of the system), you may have to turn the camera off and reboot yet again, and then try it before it works.
The problem with some of these "EasyShare" software packages is that they can not detect an already detected device type unless the correct drivers were associated with it and loaded the first time it was plugged in. If you just try plugging in the USB and camera, Windows Plug and Play will search for the drivers and not find them. If you cancel, after that, Windows will not even look for drivers for that device the next time you plug it in, as it has an error status (drivers not found). And of course the software install package does not know how to handle and correct this minor problem when it gets installed.
These digital camera with USB interfaces that require special software to download pictures are a bad design from the users point of view. Under Windows ME and XP you should just be able to plug them in like a USB memory stick and the system see it as a disk drive. This would allow you to copy and delete image files just like they were on a removable drive. And you could use almost any system and not have to bother with "special software" just to download pictures. When I find a good digital camera that will do that, I will consider buying one for my system, but not if I have to load propriety software just to download pictures from the camera.

JackG has hit the nail on the head!
A friend has a Kodak camera and that uses 'Easy-Share' software. Ad-Aware reports it as being filled with spyware. Fortunately I found JUST THE DRIVERS without the other stuff that comes with it. Now my friend can save the images to his hard drive as the camera shows up as a removable drive in 'My Computer' (Win ME).My own camera (Nikon Coolpix 3500) has no such problems and shows up as a removable drive without any additional software (Win ME standard drivers).
I will look around the net for your drivers and in the mean time.......you can feast your eyes on my first attempt at a web site. There are some great pictures (taken with my camera) from our local drag race track (Santa Pod, Northants, England). The file sizes are high and may take a while to download if you are on 'dial-up'. If you are on 'broadband', download times will not be a problem.

If you want to sign the new guest book, that's OK.

The drivers come as a compressed (.zip) executable. Win ME can open zipped files if it's enabled. You can also use Winzip etc.
You will have to copy the contents of the zipped folder to an ORDINARY folder first! As a side note.....
With Win ME, you can make ANY folder show the files as Thumbnails & as a slideshow, not just the 'My Pictures' folder. Post back for details.....Post back if you do (or don't) get sorted.

Thank you for your advice. As soon as I get a free evening I will try the executable files and then the other response posted by JackG.
I will let you all know what I come up with. Thanks for the help.
